Position: Senior Materials & Processes Engineer (Additive Manufacturing)
Location: Southgate

Blue Origin invites qualified candidates to join our Engines business unit as a Materials & Processes Engineer focused on Metallic Additive Manufacturing for spaceflight systems. This role will influence technology roadmap and process strategy for liquid rocket engines and other propulsion components.

Responsibilities
  • Lead tactical and strategic efforts within the cross‑functional Materials & Processes team to direct additive manufacturing (AM) initiatives and hardware development.
  • Identify low‑maturity AM technologies that improve technical performance or manufacturability of liquid rocket engines.
  • Mentor and support a team of AM engineers, fostering high performance and growth.
  • Develop AM processes, parameters, requirements, and specifications for existing and novel metallic materials.
  • Lead test campaigns to design, collect, and analyze material property data for in‑house fabricated metallic parts and engine hardware.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, quality, and integration engineers to implement AM requirements throughout all phases.
  • Execute root‑cause analysis and corrective action efforts on AM builds.
  • Optimize and harden AM processes to increase throughput and reduce variability.
  • Contribute to the creation of internal engineering and quality processes that standardize and accelerate material evaluation and implementation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 7+ years of direct experience in Metallic Additive Manufacturing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science/engineering or a related field.
  • Principal investigator experience in process development and optimization of metallic AM processes.
  • Hands‑on experience measuring, analyzing, developing, and characterizing AM of nickel (e.g., Inconel), aluminum, and copper alloys.
  • Proven project management skills—managing technology development projects, tracking technical progress, resources, and budgets.
  • Knowledge of powder metallurgy.
  • Experience with characterization methods such as SEM, EDS, EBSD, PSD, XRF, ICP, and OES.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute test plans for the analysis and qualification of components or materials.
  • Strong written and technical communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Material Science/Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in the Laser Powder Bed Fusion industry.
  • Experience transitioning materials and processes from development to production.
  • Product‑impact focused mindset.
  • Experience with statistical analysis.

Base Pay Range for WA applicants is $ – $. Other site ranges may differ.
