About the role:We are currently seeking a n Environmental Specialist to join our team. This person will perform essential duties within the Midwest environmental services department, responsible for operations in Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama, including directing or assisting in the development of environmental permit applications and reports; providing technical expertise in any of the aspects of permitting and compliance such as air quality, hydrogeology, biology, and chemical and waste storage and management.
The position is also responsible for permit administrative duties, including permit renewals, permit modifications, and required reporting.
The position may also provide field assistance to active mine sites.
Duties will include:
- Preparation and review of scientific data for inclusion in permit applications and environmental plans and reports with the goal of meeting regulatory performance standards and minimizing mine costs.
- Knowledge of hydrology permitting and monitoring requirements and ability to complete periodic reporting requirements and modify plans to operational and regulatory needs (NPDES, SPCC, SMCRA).
- Knowledge of air permitting, monitoring, and reporting requirements and ability to obtain monitoring certifications (SSOA, MSOP, FESOP).
- Knowledge of waste and chemical storage, management, and spill requirements and familiarity with reporting obligations (TRI, SPCC). Assisting operations with waste and spill management and contractor coordination.
- Knowledge of wetland and stream mitigation permitting and ability to review and compile monitoring data for submission to regulatory agencies.
- Coordinate and prepare permit administration documents including:
- NPDES discharge reporting
- NPDES applications, modifications, and renewals.
- Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans
- Air permit applications, modifications, and renewals.
- Periodic air permit reporting (opacity Method
9). - Wetland and stream mitigation reporting.
- Coordination and preparation of permit applications, revisions, and amendments. This may include collaboration with mine and agency personnel, as well as collaboration and directing the activities of department personnel as-needed.
- Provide temporary assistance to the mine environmental staffs as required during times of extended personnel absences. Provide assistance to other Peabody Americas operations as needed.

- Ensure that you are aware of and have acknowledged the health and safety responsibilities specific to your job/position.
- Successfully complete your safety and health responsibilities. Be knowledgeable in Risk Management techniques and following the SLAM process for all work assignments.
This position is a full-time role, working from Wild Boar mine in Indiana. The schedule is: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. M-F (or equivalent) with overtime and weekends as required.
About you:Education/experience:
- Minimum B.S. Degree in Environmental related field, MS preferred.
- Preferred a minimum of three years of experience in mining or similar industry.
- Knowledge of Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama environmental regulations.
- A strong commitment to safety.
- Excellent organizational and writing skills.
- Must be proficient in computer software including Microsoft Office Excel and Word. Autocad, GIS, and Access experience is desired.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with all levels of management, mine personnel, the general public, and regulatory agencies.
- Ability to listen effectively.
- Ability to collaborate with others in a team setting.
- Ability to work on several projects simultaneously and adjust to shifting work priorities.
- Preferred ability to obtain professional certifications, including but not limited to, LPG, GISP, or PE
- Must have the ability to stand for up to 4 hours per shift
- Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles
