As an Electrical Engineer III, you will serve as a senior technical contributor responsible for leading the design, analysis, and implementation of electrical systems supporting utility, infrastructure, and industrial projects. This role requires advanced engineering expertise, strong project execution capabilities, and the ability to provide technical leadership to engineers, designers, and project teams.
The Electrical Engineer III is expected to independently manage complex engineering assignments, provide quality assurance and technical oversight of engineering deliverables, mentor junior engineers, and serve as a key technical resource throughout the project lifecycle.
This individual will collaborate closely with project managers, clients, field personnel, and cross-functional teams to ensure successful project delivery while maintaining compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
Location: Remote (Candidates must be based in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Missouri, or Iowa)
Key Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Engineering Design- Lead the design and engineering of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems, utility infrastructure, and related electrical facilities.
- Independently prepare and review complex electrical system designs, including single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, protection schemes, equipment layouts, and construction packages.
- Perform and review advanced engineering calculations, including load flow analysis, voltage drop calculations, short circuit analysis, equipment sizing, conductor sizing, and system coordination studies.
- Develop engineering solutions for complex utility and industrial projects while balancing technical, operational, schedule, and budget considerations.
- Serve as Engineer of Record on assigned projects where applicable.
- Ensure engineering designs comply with client standards, utility requirements, NEC, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Lead engineering efforts from project initiation through design, construction support, testing, and project closeout.
- Coordinate engineering activities with project managers to support project scope, schedules, budgets, and deliverable commitments.
- Develop project work plans, engineering estimates, schedules, and resource requirements.
- Participate in client meetings and provide technical presentations, recommendations, and project updates.
- Review and approve engineering calculations, design packages, specifications, and construction drawings prepared by junior engineers and designers.
- Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentorship to Electrical Engineers I and II, designers, and engineering technicians.
- Support quality assurance and quality control processes to ensure project accuracy and compliance with engineering standards.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university.
- Minimum of 7 years of electrical engineering experience, preferably supporting utility, power delivery, infrastructure, industrial, or energy-related projects.
- Demonstrated experience leading electrical design efforts and coordinating multi-disciplinary engineering projects.
- Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems, utility infrastructure, and engineering design practices.
- Experience reviewing engineering deliverables and providing technical oversight.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
- Proven ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
- Advanced experience with utility distribution systems, substations, power delivery, and industrial electrical systems.
- Experience serving as Engineer of Record.
- Proficiency with engineering software such as AutoCAD, GIS platforms, CYME, ETAP, SKM, Pole Loading Analysis software, and other utility engineering tools.
- Experience supporting utility clients, investor-owned utilities, cooperatives, or municipal utilities.
- Project leadership or project management experience.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading technical teams, providing significant technical oversight, serving as trusted client advisors, and demonstrating readiness for engineering management responsibilities.
