- Set engineering strategy, priorities, milestones, and accountability across the organization.
- Recruit, develop, and lead high-performing engineers, technical leads, and managers.
- Own product development from device and subsystem architecture through integration, validation, qualification, and production.
- Translate business and customer needs into clear product requirements and engineering programs.
- Make system-level tradeoffs across performance, power, bandwidth, reliability, cost, manufacturability, and schedule.
- Identify critical technical risks early and drive practical plans to resolve them.
- Establish effective processes for design reviews, testing, reliability, yield, and production readiness.
- Work closely with foundries, packaging vendors, suppliers, and manufacturing partners.
- Partner with the CEO and leadership team on product strategy, hiring, customers, and company growth.
- 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in hardware engineering and product development.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and senior technical leaders.
- A demonstrated record of bringing complex hardware from development into production.
- Strong understanding of system architecture and the interactions among devices, electronics, packaging, manufacturing, test, and software.
- Sound technical judgment, including the ability to make decisions with incomplete information.
- The ability to move comfortably between executive priorities, product architecture, and detailed technical problem-solving.
- Clear communication, strong ownership, urgency, and a practical approach to execution.
- A leadership style that sets direction, delegates effectively, challenges assumptions, and steps in when difficult problems require direct involvement.
Strong candidates will have experience in several of the following areas:
- Optical transceivers, high-speed optical links, or switching systems
- Silicon photonics, thin-film lithium niobate, or InP devices
- Lasers, modulators, photodetectors, and optical receivers
- RF, microwave, Ser Des, or other high-speed electrical interfaces
- Optical packaging, fiber attachment, and thermal integration
- Semiconductor fabrication, foundries, OSATs, and contract manufacturing
- Automated test, qualification, reliability, manufacturing yield, and scale-up
- Ethernet, Infini Band, PCIe, CXL, data-center networking, AI infrastructure, or high-performance computing
This role is for a builder, not an administrator. You should be comfortable growing an organization while staying close to the technology and the work. You do not need to be the leading specialist in every discipline. You must understand the complete system well enough to ask the right questions, challenge technical assumptions, resolve cross-functional tradeoffs, and keep teams focused on the product.
Success means delivering hardware that performs, can be manufactured repeatedly, scales economically, and works reliably for customers.
This is an on-site position in the San Francisco Bay Area. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
CompensationBase salary: $200,000–$350,000 per year plus equity, reflecting the candidate's experience, expected contribution, and long-term role.
