Position Summary
The Controls Engineer designs, supports, and maintains automation and control systems across the Primary End, including the EAF, LMF, Degasser, Caster, Baghouse, and Refractory areas. This role is responsible for advanced troubleshooting, system design, programming, and integration of PLC, HMI, electrical, and data systems that directly support production. The Controls Engineer is hands on and serves as the technical lead for complex issues and controls related projects, with a mix of breakdown response and project focused work.
This role is part of the maintenance team and works closely with operations, engineering, environmental, and IT to maintain safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations.
- Design and support all automation and control systems within the Primary End
- Troubleshoot complex automation and electrical issues impacting production
- Create, modify, and maintain PLC logic using Allen Bradley and Siemens platforms
- Develop, modify, and maintain HMI applications using Ignition, Wonderware, Factory Talk and supported platforms
- Collect, analyze, and interpret plant and process data to support troubleshooting and improvements
- Lead the electrical and controls scope, including verifying electrical and controls prints, for new equipment installations within the Primary End
- Support Level 2 systems including data transfer and system integration
- Coordinate with IT on industrial communication and network related issues
- Provide controls and electrical support to environmental systems including Baghouse operations
- Support EAF, LMF, Degasser, Caster, and Refractory areas with advanced controls and electrical issues
- Manage licensing and configuration of automation and controls software
- Perform root cause analysis on recurring or complex failures
- Participate in safety reviews and housekeeping tours
- Assist with spare parts identification and setup in the warehouse
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with other maintenance team members as well as with operations, engineering, environmental, and IT
- A.S. degree in a technical discipline or equivalent demonstrated PLC programming experience
- Minimum 5 years of industrial automation controls experience
- Experience with PLC and HMI programming using Allen Bradley, Siemens, and Wonderware platforms
- Excellent electrical troubleshooting skills
- Ability to own and resolve complex technical problems
- Good organizational, interpersonal, communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills
- B.S. degree in a technical discipline
- Experience in heavy industrial or steel manufacturing environment
- Experience with data analysis and trending tools
- Good understanding of change management, system backups, and documentation standards
