Job Description & How to Apply Below
Location: Northern

The Industrial Strategies Division (ISD) is seeking an Engineering Geologist (EG) for the newly established Strategies Assessment Section in the Carbon Management Branch. This position supports California's efforts to meet carbon neutrality by supporting and advancing carbon dioxide removal strategies. Specifically, the EG will use their geologic, scientific, policy, and regulatory knowledge to develop and propose regulations to support a statewide permit portal for carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects as well as regulation(s) for project monitoring, reporting, quantification, verification, financial responsibility, and other project requirements.

This work supports California's fight against climate change, implementation of the 2022 Assembly Bill (AB 32) Scoping Plan, and implementation of Senate Bill (SB 905) (2022, Cabellero) to achieve the climate target in AB 1279. The 2022 AB 32 Scoping Plan and multiple independent scientific and technical analyses are clear that for California to get to carbon neutrality, the State needs to deploy all tools available to both reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to capture and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.

CCUS as well as CDR are part of this toolkit, and we expect increasing deployment of CCUS and CDR technologies over the coming decades.

Under the direction of an Air Resources Supervisor I, in addition to the regulatory work described above, the EG will also support the section and Branch by providing evaluations of the efficacy, safety, and viability of various CCUS and CDR technologies and approaches for California; reviewing CCUS and CDR projects applying under California Air Resources Board's (CARB) protocol(s); implementing approaches to track carbon dioxide removal projects and their outcomes.

The EG will also work with other CARB divisions, CalEPA, and other State agencies, and external organizations, including industry, environmental organizations, and community groups.

NOTE:

IF SELECTED FOR THE POSITION, YOUR SALARY OFFER IS DETERMINED BY WHAT YOU INCLUDE ON YOUR STANDARD STATE APPLICATION (STD. 678).

You will find additional information about the job in the Duty Statement .
