The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System ("System"). The System is a defined benefit retirement system covering governmental employees within the State of Maryland. It’s composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with over 50 different rule sets. The System has over 430,000 participants (customers), including 192,000 members who are actively employed and participating in the System, 165,000 payees who receive a monthly payment from the System, and 40,000 vested members who are no longer actively employed but have earned a benefit that will become payable at a future date.

Main Purpose of JobThis position serves as the lead worker of the Retirement Finals Processing Team. As a lead worker, this position is responsible for working closely with the unit supervisor in the daily processing of work and providing technical direction to staff in the finalization of retirement requests and creating lifetime payment records. This position must maintain knowledge of internal policies and procedures, federal and state pension laws, regulations, and the ability to properly process work.
Based on reviews of retirement payrolls and salary data, this position also makes recommendations to management for solutions regarding complex retirement payroll situations.
- Utilizing independent judgement to assign and review estimate requests and application calculation worksheets in accordance with established procedures to minimize retirement backlogs and to ensure timely and accurate processing.
- Reviewing and/or resolving salary audit cases in Customer Relationship Management software (CRM). Reviewing the applicable salary data for the case, creating the appropriate corrective transactions and submitting for approval and resolution.
- Providing guidance and training to new and existing staff in the preparation and calculation of estimate requests and retirement application calculation worksheets in accordance with established procedures to minimize backlogs and to ensure timely processing.
- Working in conjunction with the section supervisor in the preparation and modification of procedures, internal policies, checklists, worksheets, and other job aides.
- Completing special projects assigned by the Retirement Processing Manager, Deputy Director or Director including locating and retiring vested members.
Education:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience:
Three years of administrative staff or professional work. Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to two years of the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor s degree from a college or university for the required experience.
