Position Overview:

Sprague Excavating LLC, a leader in farm drainage and excavation, is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Controller to oversee all financial operations and reporting activities. The Controller will be a strategic partner to the leadership team, ensuring the company’s financial health and supporting the continued growth of the business. This role involves managing all accounting functions, financial planning, budgeting, and compliance while providing valuable insights for decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Financial Management:
  • Oversee the preparation and review of financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all financial reporting, both internal and external.
  • Develop and monitor financial budgets, forecasts, and performance metrics.
  • Perform financial analysis to support business decision-making, identifying trends, opportunities, and risks.
2. Accounting Operations:
  • Manage the company’s accounting operations, including payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, and tax reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations.
  • Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard company assets.
3. Strategic Financial Planning:
  • Provide financial input on strategic business decisions, including capital expenditures, project financing, and growth initiatives.
  • Collaborate with department managers to prepare annual operating budgets and long-term financial plans.
  • Monitor cash flow and liquidity needs, ensuring the company has the financial resources to support ongoing operations and investments.
4. Team Leadership:
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.
  • Ensure the team is trained on new accounting procedures, software, and compliance requirements.
5. Compliance and

Risk Management:
  • Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and financial reporting standards.
  • Monitor and mitigate financial risks related to company operations, including project costing, revenue recognition, and contract management.
6. System and Process Improvement:
  • Evaluate and improve accounting systems and processes to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Lead initiatives to automate financial reporting and streamline operations.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting or finance, preferably in construction or a related industry.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Quick Books, Sage) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Work Environment:
  • This position is based at our headquarters in Sturgis, KY. Some travel may be required for site visits and meetings.
  • The role will involve interaction with senior management, project managers, and field operations.
