Deputy Jailer

This is skilled work performed inside the county jail. An employee in this class is responsible for the supervision of inmates. A Deputy Jailer is a hazardous law enforcement position that regularly requires face to face contact with inmates. Deputy Jailers need to be able to respond to situations where there may be a high degree of danger or peril and respond with the appropriate level of force needed to maintain order in the jail.

Deputy Jailers need to be aware that they can be exposed to infectious diseases, blood borne pathogens, and dangerous airborne contaminates as a result of working with the inmate population. This position requires a high degree of physical conditioning in order to effectively control uncooperative and combative inmates, as well as deal with the physical and mental stress associated with the duties of this position.

Deputy Jailers must be able and willing to take all necessary steps to defend the public, other jail staff, inmates, and themselves with the necessary level of force, up to and including deadly physical force. Deputy Jailers will be exposed to oleoresin capsicum in many forms and other non-lethal irritants as a result of this position. Deputy Jailers will be required to transport inmates of every custody level outside of the facility for a multitude of reasons, thus will be required to be trained in the appropriate and effective use of deadly force.

This work will be performed under general and limited supervision, thus requires a high level of integrity and a strict following of the Code of Ethics. Deputy Jailers must follow all federal, state, and local laws and standards at all times.

Major Essential Duties
  • Check previous shift logs and the population count at the beginning of each shift.
  • Keep a running log of all shift activities.
  • Follow procedures associated with the processing of new inmates, including:
  • Processing incoming inmates into the jail management system
  • Maintaining a telephone log
  • Completing forms associated with processing of new inmates.
  • Securing inmate personal property and valuables in a locked room
  • Placing the inmate in the appropriate housing location
  • Filing all paperwork associated with the processing.
  • Check cells regularly for the condition of the inmates, and the inmates' activities as required by standards.
  • Remove and return inmates from their cell, and escort them to the appropriate areas when they are required to go to:
  • Recreation
  • Medical and/or mental health services
  • Religious and/or other self-improvement services offered at the jail.
  • Work assignments
  • Court
  • Attorney visits
  • Supervise inmates on work assignments to ensure all proper procedures are being followed when preparing and serving meals, cleaning laundry, and cleaning the jail building.
  • Follow all procedures associated with the final release of inmates, including:
  • Completing all proper documentation associated with the release.
  • Returning all personal property and money upon release
  • Counting bond money and issuing receipts as required
  • Ability to make routine computations and tabulations with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to transport inmates to a hospital, dentist, or court as required.
  • Ability to guard duty at a hospital for an entire shift as required.
  • Ability to serve and file warrants as required.
  • Conduct and supervise the various court hearings conducted via video teleconference.
  • Monitor the two-way radio system used by other Deputy Jailers.
  • Monitor the security cameras and audio speakers throughout the jail.
  • Communicate effectively with members of the public in person or via telephone and answer questions posed by them.
  • Ability to work under general and limited supervision.
  • Answer Inmate Request Forms and return them to the inmate.
  • Supply inmates with necessary items such as hygiene products, clothing, toilet paper, etc.
  • Collect and deliver mail daily.
  • Deliver canteen products to inmates when received by the jail.
  • Supervise indoor and outdoor recreation.
  • Provide emergency first aid, AED, and/or CPR to any inmate or staff member in need of emergent medical treatment and assist medical staff once they arrive.
  • Act as a field training officer for new employees when required.
  • Follow all lawful orders and directives issued by a superior ranking officer.
  • Follow all federal, state, and local laws and standards.
  • Follow all Boone County Jail Policies and Procedures, and the Code of Ethics.
Minor Essential Duties
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the facility, especially staff only areas.
  • Assists Supervisors in ensuring all staff are following policies and procedures, and the Code of Ethics.
  • Cross train to gain the ability to work in every area of the jail and work camp.
  • Attend and complete firearms training to qualified to carry and utilize a firearm during transportation of inmates and hospital duty.
