The Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Adult Institutions operates 13 correctional facilities that house Kentucky's adult inmate population. The mission of DOC is to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and to provide a safe, secure, and humane environment for staff and offenders in carrying out the mandates of the legislative and judicial processes; and, to provide opportunities for offenders to acquire skills which facilitate non‑criminal behavior.
This Corrections Recreation Program Supervisor is essential to providing a wide range of recreational opportunities to offenders. The occupant of this position will supervise the institution's recreational staff in planning, coordinating, and directing all offender recreational activities. Due to the varied population of offenders, a variety of innovative planned activities and daily recreational opportunities will be needed to accommodate. This position requires consulting closely with the Warden, Deputy Wardens, Fiscal Manager, and institutional security staff.
- Plans, directs, and coordinates recreational activities to meet specific needs, interests, and abilities of correctional clients in a large correctional facility.
- Consults with various institutional staff in planning recreational programs for all residents.
- Prepares budgets, reports, and other documentation as required.
- Orders recreational equipment and supplies as authorized to accommodate institutional need.
- Keeps maintenance records on recreational equipment.
- Prepares staffing schedules, reports staff attendance, and completes staff evaluations.
- Attends meetings and completes training as required to meet the best needs of the institution.
This job requires a security‑minded individual who can be an effective team leader. Solid communication skills are essential to communicating with institutional staff and offenders. Innovative thinking and planning are a necessity to providing a wide range of activity options.
Minimum Requirements- Education: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree.
- Experience, training, or skills: Three years of experience in planned recreation, physical education, or related activities.
- Substitute education for experience: None.
- Substitute experience for education: Experience in planned recreation, physical education, or related activities will substitute for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis. Current or prior military experience will substitute for the required college on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Special requirements (age, licensure, regulation, etc.): None.
Work is generally performed within a correctional institution. Work environment is hazardous due to working in a state correctional facility with inmates.
Probationary PeriodThis job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
