Description Position Summary

The Manager, Government Relations is responsible for supporting and executing government affairs initiatives that advance Maverik's business objectives and address legislative, regulatory, and public policy matters affecting retail operations. The position serves as a key government relations resource, helping to coordinate advocacy efforts, develop policy analyses and communications, manage stakeholder relationships, and represent the company's interests with external organizations and government officials.

The role requires strong functional expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic policy environment. Working closely with internal business partners and external stakeholders, the Manager contributes to departmental performance through effective execution, collaboration, and issue management while operating within established departmental objectives and escalation guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

PRIMARY FOCUS:
This position is dedicated to legislative and regulatory issues affecting convenience stores and Maverik's retail operations, including alcohol and tobacco sales, fuel retailing, food service, age-verification requirements, data privacy, and related compliance matters at the local, state, and federal levels. Sets the strategic direction and priorities for government affairs activities affecting Maverik’s convenience-store and retail operations.

  • Supports the execution of government affairs strategies and priorities affecting Maverik's retail operations.
  • Monitors legislative, regulatory, and political developments and evaluates potential business impacts.
  • Implements advocacy plans and policy initiatives aligned with departmental objectives.
  • Leads advocacy efforts within assigned policy areas and jurisdictions related to alcohol and tobacco sales, fuel retailing, food service, age-verification requirements, data privacy, and other regulatory matters affecting retail operations.
  • Develops policy analyses, briefing materials, talking points, correspondence, testimony, and other government affairs materials.
  • Represents the company before policymakers, regulators, industry associations, coalitions, and community stakeholders within assigned jurisdictions and areas of responsibility.
  • Builds and maintains productive working relationships with government officials, trade associations, consultants, and external partners.
  • Coordinates with legal, compliance, operations, merchandising, fuel, food service, information security, communications, and other stakeholders to support company positions and advocacy efforts.
  • Tracks legislative and regulatory developments and communicates relevant information to department leadership and business partners.
  • Manages relationships with external lobbyists, consultants, trade associations, coalitions, and advocacy partners within assigned jurisdictions and policy areas.
  • Evaluates emerging issues and provides recommendations regarding potential business, operational, and compliance impacts.
  • Supports budget administration, vendor management, and resource planning activities within established departmental guidelines.
  • Escalates significant legislative, regulatory, political, and business issues to department leadership as appropriate.
  • Serves as a knowledgeable internal resource regarding legislative and regulatory matters affecting Maverik's retail operations.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, government, business, law, communications, or a related field strongly preferred.
  • Advanced degree such as an MBA, MPA, JD, or related graduate degree preferred but not required.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in government relations, public affairs, legislative affairs, regulatory affairs, public policy, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting legislative, regulatory, or public policy initiatives and advocacy efforts.
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with government officials, regulatory agencies, industry associations, or external stakeholders.
