R2484### ESSENTIAL TASKSThe tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Receives, transports, supervises and monitors the work of inmate workers and community service defendants participating in the respective programs from SC Department of Corrections, Solicitor’s Office, Magistrate Courts and Detention Center.

Receives written and/or verbal instructions for the assignment of inmates and community service workers.

Prepares and maintains reports of assigned activities and worker records.

Provides training of crew members on the policies, procedures and laws that govern inmates pertaining to the Department of Corrections.

Supervises an average of 40 inmates and community service defendants.  Monitors the timely completion of work assignments, which may include but are not limited to litter control, general custodial maintenance, grounds maintenance, vehicle maintenance, debris disposal, delivery of equipment and goods, etc.; inspects work for compliance with instructions, policies and procedures, and standards of quality and safety; provides assistance as needed.

Provides the strict enforcement of program rules and regulations and monitors inmate movement in unconfined areas of the County ensuring safety of staff and general public.

Operates general office equipment, a vehicle, various grounds maintenance equipment and tools; supervise the proper use and maintenance of equipment.

Responds to emergency situations or other incidents that put the safety of crew members, staff or the general public at risk; requests back-up assistance as needed.

Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility.

Performs general clerical work as required, including preparing records and reports, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, answering the telephone, etc.

Attends meetings, training, seminars, etc., as necessary to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.
** VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:
** Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by formal training, special courses or self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in criminal justice, corrections or a closely related field.
** SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
** Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

Must attend and obtain required certification from the S.C. Department of Corrections Training Academy.
** EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
** Requires over six months and up to and including one year.
