Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to lead and manage the Police Department operations at the Division level, in accordance with the policies, rules, regulations and directives established by the Chief of Police to ensure a safe and secure Village.

In the absence of the Chief of Police, the Police Commander may assume functional authority over departmental operations within their purview or possibly the entire department. Police Commanders will assume command of police operations and will direct police functions. Police Commanders are accountable for their respective decisions and actions, as well as the performance and productivity of their respective employees. Police Commanders work directly with the Deputy Chief of Police and/or Police Chief who will be responsible for direct supervision and duty assignments.

As a municipal organization, Greenwood Village is a provider of emergency services. Some emergency situations, including weather‑related emergencies, may necessitate Greenwood Village employees to assist in areas of work which may not be directly related to the employees’ specific job function, but which will be within the physical capabilities, training, and skills of the employee.

Essential Mobility Functions

The physical requirement of this position includes heavy manual labor requiring a full range of physical motion including sitting, standing, walking, running, pushing, pulling, twisting, turning, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, crawling, and reaching for objects; talking to and hearing customers on the telephone and in person; manual dexterity for use of office equipment and manual hand tools; lifting and carrying objects up to 100 pounds.

In very rare occasions the lifting and carrying objects may be in excess of 100 pounds.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities
  • Leadership, Supervision and Decision Making
    • Provides leadership and mentoring to employees of the department to accomplish organizational goals, manage processes and develop people.
    • Participates in strategic and tactical problem solving by effectively seeking pertinent information from which the causes and solutions can be deduced, utilizing the community policing philosophy.
    • Exhibits flexibility and receptiveness to new ideas with the ability to make constructive changes from ineffective courses of actions, always reflecting a problem‑oriented, community sensitive approach.
    • Confronts problems assertively; makes independent decisions appropriate to level of command; performs effectively under stressful conditions.
    • Coordinates and assigns essential functions to employees within the division.
  • Organization and Scheduling
    • Coordinates the activities of the Division with those of other governmental agencies, and other Divisions within the Police Department.
