Job Skills / RequirementsJob Summary / Purpose
The Emergency Department Technician (ER Tech) provides direct patient care and technical support under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or physician in the Emergency Department (ED). The ER Tech assists with patient triage, treatments, and procedures while ensuring compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, EMTALA requirements, hospital policies, and state/federal regulations.
- Assist nursing and provider staff with patient assessment, treatment, and transport in accordance with EMTALA regulations.
- Obtain and document vital signs, weight, height, blood glucose, and EKGs accurately and timely.
- Assist with specimen collection, labeling, and transport following CAP/TJC chain-of-custody and patient identification requirements.
- Support RN staff in patient triage, including gathering medical history and chief complaint information.
- Provide basic patient care (bathing, toileting, positioning, ambulation) consistent with licensure.
- Perform CPR, AED use, splinting, wound care, and other delegated procedures within scope of practice.
- Set up and maintain sterile fields and assist with ED procedures (e.g., suturing, line insertions).
- Transport patients safely within the facility while maintaining continuous observation when required.
- Apply monitoring equipment (pulse oximetry, cardiac monitoring) as directed by nursing staff.
- Maintain working knowledge of EMTALA obligations, ensuring no patient is delayed or denied medical screening or stabilizing treatment.
- Adhere to TJC National Patient Safety Goals, infection prevention policies (CDC, hospital standards), and HIPAA confidentiality requirements.
- Ensure accurate, timely, and complete documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Participate in emergency preparedness drills, trauma activations, and code situations in accordance with hospital policy.
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff to promote safe, patient-centered care.
- Communicate clearly with patients and families, providing comfort measures and updates under RN direction.
- Actively participate in shift handoffs, department huddles, and interdisciplinary team meetings.
Minimum Qualifications Required Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current EMT-B license in the state of Kentucky or active SRNA certification in the state of Kentucky with no restrictions
- BLS

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENT
