Peer Support Specialist

The Peer Support position at Beacons of Hope in Hindman, is designed to provide compassionate, empathetic, and informed support to individuals navigating personal challenges, including mental health and substance use recovery. This role focuses on fostering a safe and trusting environment where peers can share experiences, gain encouragement, and build resilience through mutual support. The Peer Support specialist will serve as a vital link between clients and community resources, helping to guide individuals toward appropriate services and opportunities for growth.

By leveraging lived experience and active listening skills, the role aims to empower clients to take positive steps toward wellness and self-sufficiency. Ultimately, this position contributes to the overall mission of Beacons of Hope by enhancing community well-being and promoting recovery-oriented systems of care.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Personal lived experience with recovery from mental health or substance use challenges.
  • Completion of a recognized Peer Support training program or certification.
  • Strong communication and active listening skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in community-based behavioral health or social service settings.
  • Additional certifications related to mental health, substance use, or trauma-informed care.
  • Familiarity with local resources and support networks in the Hindman and Vicco areas.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and communication purposes.
  • Bilingual abilities or cultural competency relevant to the community served.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one peer support and group facilitation to individuals seeking assistance with mental health or substance use challenges.
  • Develop and maintain trusting relationships with clients by sharing lived experiences and offering empathetic guidance.
  • Assist clients in identifying personal goals and connecting them with appropriate community resources and services.
  • Document interactions and progress notes accurately and confidentially in compliance with organizational policies.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support client care plans and participate in ongoing training and professional development.

Skills:

The required skills such as active listening, empathy, and effective communication are essential for building rapport and trust with clients on a daily basis. Peer Support specialists use their lived experience to relate authentically and provide hope, which is critical in motivating clients toward recovery goals.
