Job Description Summary
The Radiologic Technologist (RT) works with Medical Providers and/or Medical Assistants with the examination and treatment of UPMC-GoHealth Urgent Care patients. This role is responsible for providing a variety of technical procedures and applying prescribed ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis for our UPMC-GoHealth Urgent Care patients. This role is responsible for performing and analyzing patient x‑rays and reporting results to Medical Providers.
Additional responsibilities include providing administrative support to ensure efficient operation of UPMC-GoHealth Urgent Care Centers. In a collaborative manner, the Radiologic Technologist will provide support to Medical Providers, Medical Assistants, and patients through a variety of tasks related to patient care management, organization, and communication.
- Responsible for x‑ray services as needed under the direction of the clinical provider.
- Perform x‑ray services for patients by applying x‑ray energy to assist in diagnosis or treatment of patients in all age groups from newborn to elderly.
- Ensure patients are positioned correctly on or in front of equipment and protected during use.
- May need to push patient in a wheelchair.
- Inform technical staff of patient flow.
- Prepare patients for examination, including conducting interviews to verify patient information, record medical history, and confirm purpose of visit.
- Perform preliminary physical tests (blood pressure, weight, temperature, etc.) for vital signs and escalating critical cases to the provider as needed.
- Conduct point‑of‑care testing as needed (flu, strep, urinalysis, ECG, HCG) and provide patient information to providers.
- Maintain medical records and scan charts to patient files.
- Conduct courtesy call‑backs for patient follow‑up on care.
- Follow operating instructions to perform and document daily controls and calibration of equipment; maintain QA/QC logs for equipment troubleshoot breakdowns, perform preventive maintenance, and submit repair tickets as needed.
- Collaborate with the ordering/treating provider to determine which procedures or views will best assist in accurate diagnoses and treatment.
- Support clinic operations to keep the center running smoothly.
- Explain procedures to patients, ensuring their comfort and safety, and answer their questions.
- Accurately position patients and equipment for optimal imaging results.
- Select proper ionizing factors by adjusting/setting radiographic controls to capture clear, high‑quality diagnostic images.
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning of X‑ray equipment, and managing necessary supplies.
- Adhere to strict radiation safety protocols and implement ALARA to minimize exposure to patients and staff.
- Maintain accurate patient records and log completed procedures in electronic systems and/or logbooks as required.
- Verify image quality and ensure images are sent to radiologists for interpretation.
- Teleradiology reads all imaging.
- Work is varied – you are not doing the same thing all day.
- No fluoroscopy studies.
- No operating room cases.
- No unit portables.
- No on‑call or overnight shifts.
- High School Diploma required.
- Graduate of an approved Radiologic Technologist program required.
- Experience in a clinical setting preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required at the time of hire, obtained through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
- American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) registration required at time of hire.
- State licensure as a Radiologic Technologist required at the time of hire (if applicable by state law).
- Position patients properly for the X‑ray procedure.
- Identify equipment problems and correct or notify supervisor.
- Follow infection control and radiological safety procedures.
