The position provides skilled medical technology and histology capabilities to support the scope of the pathology and histology services, and the research related functions and goals of the Histopathology Laboratory in the Lombardi Cancer Center. Daily responsibilities include Immunohistochemical tissue staining, slide scanning, image acquisition and image analysis to support biomarker discovery and validation. This position is part of Immunohistochemistry Department, a sub-division of the Histopathology and Tissue Shared resource.
The position reports directly to the HTSR Director(s) and works with other personnel in immunohistochemistry and image analysis areas. Prepares billing for completed work to ensure proper payment for services provided. Provides estimates of expenses to investigators for work to be done in this division. The general laboratory environment requires adhering to safety procedures including universal precautions- gowns, gloves, masks, and goggles as appropriate.
Work in biosafety cabinets for some procedures. Also work in fume hood. Use of hazardous chemicals and other biohazardous agents including infectious agents. Microtomy and dissection using sharp instruments. May require standing and bending for extended periods. Walking short to moderate distances within and between laboratories. Hand movement and finger dexterity and high-level motor skills. Eye-hand coordination. Lifting and carrying items up to 25 pounds.
Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
This position supports translational and basic research projects including but not limited to Lombardi mission critical goals of biomarker discovery and validation. For translational research projects, within the HTSR, biospecimen are identified in the Human Tissue Bank, sectioned in the Histology laboratory and stained by the 2 technicians in the IHC facility. Coordinated activities between these three departments and appropriate communication with principal investigators are critical to the success of this position.
Requirementsand Qualifications
- Master’s degree required;
PhD preferred - Minimum of 1-2 year’s computing and laboratory experience/skills, preferably with image analysis and direct immunohistochemistry skills
- Doctoral degree with laboratory and some biocomputing skills are minimal requirements, preference for individuals with experience with Immunohistochemistry and image acquisition and analysis
- Aptitude for working with research specimens and image analysis
- Knowledge of anatomy and histology
- Background in computer and laboratory science, preferably in image analysis and Immunohistochemistry
- Proficient in Microsoft office, file, maintenance, database management and spreadsheet applications
- Laboratory experience and Doctoral degree
- Must be organized, initiative, problem solving ability
- Must be typing and office experience and skills
- Must be detail orientated
- Must be good communication skills, both verbal and written
- Must have the ability to document and keep complete records
- Must be Microsoft Office proficient
