Position Overview

The Counselor/Psychologist, Alcohol/Other Drug Professional works with a team of licensed mental health and substance use professionals, offering generalist support as a licensed clinician and providing direct therapeutic services, psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and screening/referral to students. This clinician will provide consultation to staff, students, and families regarding clinical issues and the functioning of the Counseling Center, create and participate in outreach efforts, and manage crisis calls.

The Counselor/Psychologist:
Alcohol and Other Drug ( AOD ) Professional provides leadership, visioning and direction around the coordination of substance use and co-occurring assessment, treatment and referral for the Counseling Center. This includes but is not limited to specialized individual and group counseling for students that are struggling with substance use issues or co-occurring concerns, partnership and collaboration with the collegiate recovery program ( CRP ), and outreach and collaboration with campus departments that frequently address substance use issues.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical services (assessment, individual and group therapy) for Marquette and MIAD students. Provide crisis intervention services for students, including students dealing with issues surrounding alcohol and/or substance use; consultation and referral for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Develop, coordinate, and conduct programming and outreach related to AOD on college campuses and its impact, at times after hours and some weekend hours are indicated. Collaborate when needed to conduct campus assessment of the needs and gaps in substance use services and provide recommendations for new service areas. Develop referral networks for all levels of care that can respond to and meet the extended treatment/support needs, identities, and co-occurring concerns.
  • Serve as a primary consultant for other staff and trainees working with clients with AOD and co-occurring concerns; work with Director and Health Promotion/Prevention and Collegiate Recovery team to determine the provision of services to meet community needs related to substance use prevention, assessment, intervention/treatment and referral needs. Provide supervision of an advanced-level practicum student/trainee and participate as a member of the training team, when indicated.

    Provide training opportunities and in-services to clinical staff in Wellness + Recreation as it relates to maintaining state licensure and/or certifications and needs for ongoing professional development and/or research.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Counseling Center and departments or stakeholders who address AOD
    -related concerns and demonstrate willingness and/or experience with co-workers, university partners from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences. Participate in university/departmental committees, task forces, and work groups to represent evidence-informed, culturally responsive AOD services.
Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Master's degree in Clinical, counseling psychology, social work; other related clinical degrees
  • WI state licensure at degree level (or within 1 year of employment.
  • Substance Use Certification (or eligible within 1 year) – WI state.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in both mental health and substance use clinical fields is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply culturally sensitive and responsive psychotherapy and crisis assessment within the time-limited practice of the MU-CC.
  • Ability to work with high acuity students with complex mental health and substance use concerns.
  • Ability to work successfully within a multidisciplinary team, multiple systems, at times with competing priorities.
