Job Summary:

Assesses nutrition status of patients with complex medical conditions, including performance of a nutrition-focused physical exam. Develops, implements and evaluates outcomes of nutrition care plan for patients, ensuring appropriate use of oral, enteral, and parenteral regimens. Develops, implements and evaluates nutrition education and counseling for patients, families and caregivers, and the community. Participates in the training of dietetic interns, students, and other health care professionals.

Participates in clinical nutrition outcomes research and conducts independent outcomes research in area of clinical practice.

The Diabetes Program at Monroe Carell is one of the nation's largest pediatric diabetes centers, providing comprehensive, family-centered care to more than 3,000 children with diabetes across Tennessee and eight surrounding states. Through the Vanderbilt Eskind Pediatric Diabetes Clinic and regional locations in Franklin, Murfreesboro, Jackson, Clarksville, and Cookeville, our multidisciplinary team delivers expert care tailored to the unique needs of children and their families.

Our team includes board-certified pediatric diabetes physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and registered dietitians who are Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists, as well as social workers and child life specialists. Together, they provide exceptional clinical care, education, and support to help children and families successfully manage diabetes and achieve the best possible health outcomes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assesses nutrition status, including performance of a nutrition-focused physical exam, and implements nutrition care plans to address identified nutrition diagnoses for patients with complex medical conditions, including critically ill patients and patients on enteral and/or parenteral nutrition support, using extensive knowledge and expertise, the Nutrition Care Process and standardized nutrition terminology in documentation. Monitors nutrition progress and reassesses nutrition status of critically ill patients and patients with complex medical conditions, adjusting the nutrition care plan when needed.
  • Identifies patients who meet the criteria for a medical diagnosis of malnutrition and documents criteria in the medical record.
  • Writes, accepts, and implements medical nutrition therapy and nutrition orders in eSTAR, including diet and infant feeding orders, enteral, and parenteral nutrition orders, according to the VUMC Standard Operating Procedure and RD/LDN Scope of Practice.
  • Provides nutrition counseling and education to patients, families and caregivers, and the community, using evidence-based nutrition practice guidelines, appropriate instructional methods and tools, and case management as needed to implement nutrition interventions.
  • Conducts nutrition telehealth, real-time HIPAA-compliant interactive audio and video telecommunications with patients, and monitors telehealth technologies for HIPAA compliance.
  • Trains dietetic interns, other students, and health care professionals by planning, implementing, supervising and evaluating clinical experiences and/or teaching classes.
