The Certified Medical Coder accurately codes, sequences and abstracts outpatient medical records according to ICD-10-CM and CPT coding guidelines to achieve accurate and timely reimbursement and populate statistical databases. Queries physicians for clarification on documentation. Performs duties within approved practices, exercising independent judgment within pre-determined guidelines.
Work Experience
One year of outpatient coding experience is preferred.
License/Registration/Certification
Certified Professional Coder (CPC);
Certified Coding Specialist
- Physician based (CCS-P); or Certified Billing & Coding Certification (CBCS) required.
Education and Training
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Associate of Applied Sciences in Medical Billing and Coding degree preferred.
Skills
- Knowledge of Health Information Systems practices, procedures, and guidelines.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems.
- Ability to seek out new methods and processes to improve services.
- Ability to utilize verbal and written communication skills effectively.
- Knowledge of the CPT®coding system and familiarity with the ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II coding systems.
