Job Summary:

SUNY Upstate is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Surgical
Advanced Practice Provider (APP) for our Community Campus
who will be responsible for providing Surgical Assistance in the Operative Theater and floor care to Vascular and General Surgery Inpatients
. This encompasses vascular services and procedures and will also include general services dependent on the needs of the vascular service.

The APP will be responsible for evaluation, formulating appropriate diagnoses and managing the ongoing treatment plan of the surgical patient, determining appropriateness for discharge, and discharging as needed to the appropriate level of care. The successful APP will have strong communication skills and be able to coordinate effectively with the interdisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • First Assist in General/Vascular Surgery.
  • Conducts rounds, initiates and implements care of all Surgical/Vascular patients.
  • Coordinates Surgical/Vascular floor care with non-operative APP and residents.
  • Will be technically proficient in all Surgical procedures including Vascular, IR, Robotic, Laparoscopic, and Laparotomy.
  • Assists in the pre-operative and post-operative management of patients.
  • Perform general Surgical/Vascular consultations from other services
  • Evaluate and admit general Surgical/Vascular patients from the emergency department.
  • Performs bedside procedures independently in accordance with credentialing.
  • Functions as a preceptor for APP students as part of their surgical rotation.
  • Educate and mentor new APP team members.
  • Assess and evaluate patients, order and interpret laboratory tests & diagnostic studies, and arrange referrals, consultations, and therapeutic services.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with patients, families, referring physicians, and all members of the health care team.

As an APP
, you will be an integral member of the Healthcare Team, demonstrating professionalism, leadership, and a commitment to Upstate’s mission, vision, and values, while adhering to all institutional policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant or eligible.
  • NYS Licensed/Registered NP or PA.
  • Current National Certification consistent to the clinical practice.
  • Have a NPI number and be Medicare enrolled with a Medicare Identification Number (or PTAN) (or eligible for Medicare Enrollment within 6 months of hire.
  • CPR-BLS Certification required at the time of appointment.
  • NP must have RNFA certification.
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment and credentialing clearances.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1 year or more of experience as a Surgical First Assist
  • Experience in Vascular Surgery
Work Days:

Rotational coverage for Day, Evening, and Night shift, including Weekends and Holidays.

Shifts may range from 8 to12-hour shifts.

Shifts are based on operational needs.

Position is based in a
Level I Trauma Center
that provides
Critical Care
and services to patients across a 17+ County Region. Scheduling is determined based on operational needs.
Upstate operates 24 hours a day/Seven days a week
, providing continuous care to our region.
