GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The School Health Program is one of the programs within the Medical Services Division. The primary purpose of the School Health Program is to provide nursing services to students and families enrolled in the fifty-seven (57) Durham Public Schools (DPS), to include the Alternative Educational Programs, school faculty and staff, administrators, and the larger community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prvides onsite clinical and administrative supervision of a public health nurse team in the School Health Program;
  • Coordinates and collaborates with other School Nurse Supervisors to mentor, organize, and direct staff in meeting program objectives and goals;
  • Provides information to school nurses on rules, regulations, and expectations for the program as directed by Public Health, local, and state policies;
  • Serves as a resource for all staff on all student health services questions;
  • Strategizes with Public Health and school district staff to increase the district’s capacity to address student health and academic achievement;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Requires thorough knowledge and skill in applying principles and techniques employed in public health in general and in School Health in particular.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in day-to-day activities and be flexible and receptive to change in dealing with staff and agency needs, changing program requirements, and school populations.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of others and to present findings, comments, and opinions clearly and concisely in oral and/or written form.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
  • Ability to plan and execute work effectively and to deal tactfully with the public and other health professionals.
  • Ability to record the services rendered accurately and interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instruction.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Considerable knowledge of public health nursing supervision of staff and programs.
  • Ability to act as aresource person for other supervisors and Public Health staff and other community agencies or individuals on School Health topics.

MINIMUM

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Master’s in Nursing and two years of Public Health nursing experience; or graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation and three years of Public Health nursing experience; or a Master’s in Public Health and graduation from a school of professional nursing and two years of Public Health nursing experience;

or graduation from a school of professional nursing and four years of professional nursing experience three of which must have been in Public Health; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Requires license to practice as Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the NC Board of Nursing;

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the NC Board of Nursing. Requires current valid driver's license in North Carolina.

EMERGENCY PREPARDNESS REQUIREMENTS:

Primary work hours are between the hours of 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM.
