PURPOSE:

The Mission of Student Health Services (SHS) is to build a healthy campus community by providing quality, caring, cost-effective, accredited ambulatory healthcare and health promotion services. As part of an institution of higher learning, CSUB SHS participates in the educational process by teaching students the skills for self-care, promoting their health, advocating for themselves and preventing diseases—thus enhancing their academic productivity and leading to a satisfying college experience.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Health Education & Specialty Initiatives Support
  • Assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating health promotion initiatives focused on health equity to include: students parents, special populations, dental and vision education, health insurance options.
  • Assist in developing and facilitating workshops, presentations, and outreach events that engage students through interactive activities and discussions.
  • Create, maintain, and review health education materials, displays, and online content to ensure accuracy, accessibility, and inclusivity. Evaluate suitability of materials and recommend updates or redesign to enhance effectiveness.
  • Partner with campus and community organizations (e.g., BSSC, Veteran Success Center CAEN, student clubs) to coordinate events, campaigns, and demonstrations that promote healthy behaviors.
  • Assist with gathering data to support identification of emerging students’ needs and adapting programs and resources based on evidence‑based practices and assessment data.
  • Assist in conducting follow‑up activities, including sharing resources with participants, summarizing results, and documenting lessons learned for continuous improvement.
Student Health Discussions & Resource Guidance
  • Conduct individual student discussions to provide information, guidance, and support regarding health resources and service options.
  • Engage and educate pregnant students in discussions about available wellness resources, including disability parking, nursing pads, menstrual products, and lactation room services, providing guidance on how to access and use these supports effectively.
  • Educate student parents on proper car seat use and installation, providing hands‑on demonstrations and guidance to ensure correct and safe usage.
  • Provide guidance and educate students on Cal Fresh, Covered CA, Medi‑Cal and health equity insurance programs by explaining established requirements and assisting with completion of applications.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive resource guide of on‑campus and off‑campus well‑being services including information specific for special populations needs and community support programs to ensure students have access to accurate and up‑to‑date wellness resources.
