SUBSTITUTE HEALTH SERVICES ASSISTANT

SCHOOL NURSE - RN PREFERRED

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • First Aid and CPR Certificate and Medication training
  • Minimum of LPN License.
  • Experience working in health field preferred.
  • Such additional qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS: District Health Coordinator/Principal

JOB GOAL
:
To enhance the educational process by the modification or removal of health-related barriers to learning and by promotion of an optimal level of wellness

BASIC FUNCTION
:
Administer basic first aid and screen ill or injured students in accordance with State laws and District regulations; assist with health testing programs; prepare and maintain a variety of records, files and reports.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide health services in accordance with KRS 156.502.
  • Obtain Early Periodic Screening Diagnosis and Treatment Training if deemed necessary by the school district.
  • Provide health teaching with a focus on disease prevention, health promotion and health restoration to students, parents, and school staff as required by supervisor.
  • Perform basic first aid procedures and screen ill or injured children according to established procedures; utilize a variety of health products and supplies in caring for injuries and health needs.
  • Conduct height, weight, vision, hearing, scoliosis and other health screenings as required; provides screening for head lice and observe students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
  • Refer students to appropriate personnel, resources or clinics and follow-up as necessary.
  • Maintain health records and medical logs; updates immunization and student health records in Infinite Campus; prepares and submits periodical medical reports for appropriate organizations or District personnel and assures compliance with established laws and regulations.
  • Dispense and retains medication and performs medical treatment in accordance with physician’s instructions within District guidelines.
  • Communicate with various community health agencies and civic organizations as directed.
  • Provide information and makes recommendations to Principals, substitutes, teachers and parents regarding health issues of students and school health program needs; develops programs to meet school health needs as approved by District Health Coordinator.
  • Make home visits as directed by District Health Coordinator or Administrator.
  • Maintain and inventories first aid supplies and notifies District Health Coordinator; assures medical equipment is in proper working condition.
  • Administer first aid in emergency situations and notify School District Health Coordinator, administrator, parents or paramedics as necessary.
  • Participate in screening for health defects and sanitary conditions in schools as needed.
  • Contact parents in the event of student’s illness or condition requiring the student’s dismissal from school; provides screening upon return to school to insure student health condition. Works cooperatively with parents in addressing student’s health and hygiene issues.
  • Complete all medical forms required for field trips.
  • Maintain current knowledge of medical advances and information, and treatment procedures.
  • Perform such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal, District Health Coordinator and/or the Superintendent/Designee.

TERM OF SERVICE
:
Salary and workdays/jobs to be established by the Board.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
