Main Purpose of Job

The Health Physicist Trainee will receive training to support required inspections, investigations, and other regulatory activities. Duties will include processing registrations, preventive maintenance, and certifications to protect the public and occupational personnel from unnecessary exposure to radiation from x-ray-producing machines. The incumbent will also participate in monthly staff meetings and respond to radiation emergencies as needed.

  • Exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings.
  • Exposure to hazardous conditions which may result in injury.
  • Physical demands such as lifting 20 pounds or more, climbing ladders etc.
  • Protective equipment—such as safety glasses, gloves, mask during site visits when required.

The incumbent may be required to drive a State vehicle. If you hold an out-of-state driver's license, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record from the issuing state's Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of hire. All individuals must maintain a driver's license with no more than 5 points on their driving record to operate a State vehicle.

MINIMUM

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

Four years of experience in performing the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public.

  • 1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credit hours in mathematical, physical or biological sciences for the required experience.
  • 2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Health Science or Physics;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong computer skills with a proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Experience generating database reports;
  • Detailed oriented with strong organizations skills and the ability to prioritize tasks;
  • Willingness to work as a team member;
  • Experience providing service to customers in a professional setting which must have included personal interaction with members of the general public or other customers.
