Description:

• Performs work accurately and completely when preparing specimens for histology.
• Obtains the daily surgery schedule.
• Picks up specimens according to the schedule from various surgical locations.
• Opens all surgical and Cytology specimens, checking that the requisition and specimens match and are properly labeled with two patient identifiers.
• Completes duties of workstations ordering tests, printing labels and cassettes, processing specimens, and cassetting specimens.
• Generates incomplete worklists and reports, finds specimens for testing, caps and stores specimens appropriately.
• Packages specimens and unpacks specimens that are couriered.
• Turns out slides to pathologists for resulting as appropriate.
• Assists pathologists as requested.
• Completes preventive maintenance tasks as assigned.
• Monitors inventory, orders and puts away supplies, disposes of biohazard waste, and washes glassware as needed.
• Answers phone calls within three rings and routes calls appropriately and in a timely manner.
• Works successfully with staff to problem-solve and expedite testing.
• Participates in training new personnel.
• Complies with required competency standards for the department.
• Maintains records for quality assurance, forms for internal routing, and log sheets.
• Documents quality control where applicable.
• Attends procedures and prepares smears for fine needle aspirations performed as appropriate.
• Reconciles billing for miscellaneous charges on patient accounts, as appropriate.
