Job Title:
Database Administrator / Data Engineer (Contract)
We are partnering with a growing B2B SaaS company that provides a software platform used by businesses across the United States and internationally, supporting organizations ranging from large multi-location operators to small independent businesses. The company is investing in AI initiatives, making strong data foundations a growing priority.
The company is looking for a hands-on Database Administrator / Data Engineer to bring order and reliability to its database environment. The environment includes a large, distributed fleet of database instances hosted on AWS RDS (MySQL and PostgreSQL), and this role will focus on stabilizing, optimizing, and standardizing that environment while also digging into complex, business-critical queries.
This is a mix of database administration and query analysis and optimization. It is a great fit for someone who enjoys finding and fixing the "should have been done a long time ago" issues, and who is comfortable both keeping systems healthy and troubleshooting gnarly reporting queries with complex business logic.
Key Responsibilities- Audit and stabilize a large, distributed fleet of MySQL and PostgreSQL database instances (AWS RDS)
- Identify and remediate database health and consistency issues; implement best practices across instances
- Analyze and optimize complex SQL queries tied to customer-facing reports, including diagnosing bugs, inefficiencies, and inaccuracies in query logic
- Build and execute a plan to bring instances into a consistent, well-maintained state
- Monitor database performance and proactively flag risks
- Partner closely with engineering leadership on prioritization and fixes
- Potential future scope (may expand into a separate role): data hygiene, data warehousing, and ETL work in support of the company's AI initiatives
- 5+ years of experience as a Database Administrator, Data Engineer, or Data Analyst
- Deep working knowledge of MySQL internals and strong familiarity with PostgreSQL
- Fluency in SQL, with the ability to read a query and quickly identify bugs, inefficiencies, or design flaws
- Experience managing databases hosted on AWS RDS
- Comfortable working independently in a fast-moving, "fix it now" environment
- Strong communication skills; able to work cross-functionally with a small, lean engineering team
- Experience with data warehousing, ETL pipelines, or data hygiene initiatives
- Prior experience supporting a B2B SaaS platform
- Fully remote (Candidates local to Southern California preferred)
- Contract engagement, targeted at approximately 6 months with potential to extend
- Opportunity to bring structure and reliability to a large, complex database environment
- High degree of ownership and visibility into business-critical systems
- Collaborative, lean engineering team
- Potential to extend
- Exposure to data warehousing, ETL, and AI-adjacent data initiatives as the role evolves
- Pay rate: $40 - $60/hr, W2
- Contract position (approximately 6 months, potential to extend or convert)
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis now and in the future. This position does not offer sponsorship.
