Who is Blue Dot Impact?

We're a philanthropic startup building the workforce that protects humanity
.

Since 2022, we've trained over 10,000 people in AI safety and biosecurity. Our alumni work at Anthropic, Deep Mind, the UK AI Safety Institute, and dozens of other organisations shaping how transformative technologies affect the world.

We now train over 1,000 people a month, and are deploying over $1M per month in grants to accelerate the most exceptional talent coming through our pipelines. We're a small team headquartered in San Francisco. We've raised $34M from Coefficient Giving.

Why this role matters

There are a huge number of open technical problems we must solve to make AI go well, and the field doesn't have enough exceptional people working on them.

Our 30hr Technical AI Safety course gives strong technical researchers and engineers a structured map of the field's threat models, interventions, and open problems, and clear next steps for working on them. Each month, it gets ~800 applications, we accept ~400, and invest additional resources into ~30 (each of those figures has ~doubled since March).

Currently, it's nobody's whole job to make this course excellent. The curriculum is not keeping up with the latest developments, the field's talent needs keep shifting, and we don't have the capacity to identify and accelerate every exceptional participant.

You'll own the course end to end:
The curriculum, strategy and positioning, who gets in, and who to invest additional resources in. Your taste determines what thousands of people read when they first engage with technical AI safety, and your judgment decides who we accelerate with advising and funding.

What you'll do
Set the course strategy
  • Regularly engage technical AI safety experts and hiring managers to diagnose the field's biggest knowledge and talent gaps (the things they wish their job applicants and mentees already knew).
  • Evolve the course strategy to better fill these gaps.
  • Grow the applicant pool by improving the course positioning, writing blog posts, and building your own online presence as a leader in technical AI safety talent development.
Decide what the course teaches
  • Own the curriculum. You decide what gets taught. If a resource doesn't exist, then you write it yourself.
  • Keep the curriculum current: the course reflects the crazy shifts in the AI space within weeks of them happening.
  • Make the course more challenging so the top participants get more value out of it.
Fill the course with the people the field needs
  • Double the number of “strong yes” course applications, from ~30 to 60 a month.
  • Source the talent archetypes the field is bottlenecked on, and sharpen the course's positioning and value proposition so top people are excited to apply.
Accelerate the best participants
  • Every “strong yes” participant gets a 1-1 advising call with you: understand their blockers, give them opinionated advice on their next step, and unblock them with career transition grants when funding is what's in the way.
Run an excellent course
  • Ensure the top participants finish the course. The most exceptional people love the experience and leave motivated to continue their AI safety journeys.
  • Build a bench of excellent course facilitators to make the learning experience motivating and maximally useful.
  • You won't do this alone. Two course ops staff work with you on the inbox, onboarding, and logistics, so your time goes to strategy, curriculum, and people.
About you

You might be a great fit if you:

  • Have technical AI safety research experience. You've done research through a fellowship (MATS, LASR, Astra, ERA, Anthropic Fellows, Pivotal) or at a safety org, and you've gone deep enough on at least one research agenda to advise someone else on how to do the same.
  • Write in…
