Media Support Specialist

FT Staff Gwynedd Valley, PA, US

Position Summary

We are looking for someone who knows audiovisual technology, enjoys solving problems, and takes pride in making things work well. Just as important, this person needs to work effectively with a wide variety of people, including faculty, staff, students, senior leaders, vendors, guests, and other members of the IT team. The right person will be technically curious, dependable, calm under pressure, and willing to take ownership of a problem through resolution.

The Media Support Specialist is the University's primary audiovisual and classroom technology specialist. This person takes ownership of the technology in our classrooms, meeting spaces, presentation spaces, and other University venues and helps make sure that it is reliable, well maintained, and ready when people need it.

  • Take primary ownership of the University's audiovisual, classroom, meeting, and presentation technology environments.
  • Regularly evaluate the condition and reliability of AV systems and identify problems before they interfere with classes, meetings, or events.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve AV and related technology problems and coordinate repairs or vendor support when needed.
  • Provide technical support for University events and serve as the lead AV resource for complex or high-profile events. Work with other trained members of the User Services team so that routine event support can be shared across the department.
  • Evaluate AV technologies and make recommendations for new equipment, upgrades, replacements, standards, and improvements.
  • Work with vendors on installations, repairs, upgrades, and projects and help ensure that solutions meet University needs.
  • Develop documentation and train other members of the User Services team so that AV knowledge and support are not dependent on one person.
  • Work closely with faculty, staff, students, event coordinators, Plant Services, vendors, and other University departments to understand needs, resolve problems, and coordinate technology support.
  • Participate as a member of the broader User Services and Institutional Technology Services teams and assist with other technical support responsibilities when needed.
  • Provide occasional evening and weekend support for University events.
Qualifications

We are more interested in what you can do, how you approach problems, and how you work with people than in whether you meet every item on a checklist.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Hands-on experience supporting audiovisual, classroom, conferencing, presentation, or related technologies.
  • Enough knowledge of AV technology to troubleshoot problems, evaluate solutions, work effectively with vendors, and make informed recommendations.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, including the willingness to investigate unfamiliar problems and figure out how to resolve them.
  • A strong sense of ownership. If something is not working properly, you take responsibility for getting it addressed rather than waiting for someone else to solve it.
  • The ability to remain calm, professional, and resourceful when technology fails at an inconvenient time.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with people who have different priorities, responsibilities, personalities, and levels of technical knowledge.
  • The judgment and confidence to listen, explain options, negotiate competing needs, and recommend practical solutions.
  • A collaborative approach and a willingness to share knowledge and help other members of the team develop their AV skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities with limited supervision.
  • A willingness to continue learning as technologies and University needs change.

Relevant education, technical training, certifications, or professional experience may all provide the background necessary to succeed in this position. A bachelor's degree is not required.

Experience with higher education technology, digital signage, video conferencing, streaming, AV control systems, event production, or similar technologies is helpful but not required. Familiarity with the specific products used at Gwynedd Mercy University is also helpful, but we would rather hire someone with strong technical fundamentals, good judgment, curiosity, and the ability to learn.

Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on position that requires the ability to move throughout campus classrooms and event spaces, work with installed technology and equipment, and occasionally lift or move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
