This is a Civil Service tested position, selected candidate will be hired as a provisional employee and must pass the Civil Service exam when it is next offered. This position may be subject to a background check for any convictions deemed related to its duties and responsibilities. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This technical position involves responsibility for assisting with the analysis, development, and support of the Schenectady County network infrastructure supporting voice and data connectivity. This position works under close supervision and guidance from technical staff to troubleshoot, deploy, and maintain both production and lab environment systems. Contributes to the team on a variety of projects to deliver high quality results.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (Illustrative only):- Assists with installation, configuration, maintenance, administration, security, and operational support for the voice and data network infrastructure;
- Trains for all aspects of day-to-day operations, engineering, and architecture of the Data & Voice Networks;
- Assists with the maintenance and configuration of routing protocols and installation, configuration, and maintenance of network devices;
- Minimize latency and optimize/configure distribution networks;
- Assists with the maximization of network performance by monitoring performance, troubleshooting network problems and outages, scheduling upgrades, and collaborating with network architects on network optimization;
- Assists with the implementation, support, and design of complex WAN/LAN network architecture including both physical and virtual infrastructure;
- Works with both internal and external facing clients, vendors, carriers on the circuit installation, and connectivity setup;
- Researches technical standards and best practices for connecting assets to the Schenectady County network;
- Works to secure network system by establishing and enforcing policies;
- Participates in the planning, implementation, troubleshooting of wireless networks, configuration of devices and peripherals;
- Participates in the planning, implementation, and troubleshooting of firewalls;
- Prepares documentation and diagramming of existing and planned network systems;
- Network cabling and cable testing as needed;
- Supports network monitoring and alert systems;
- Informs supervisor of the status of all operating problems.
Knowledge of network terminology, troubleshooting concepts, and full stack connectivity;
Knowledge of how to troubleshoot/triage network related issues;
Understanding of how to configure network devices and IP address management;
Understanding of routings/witching/wireless technologies;
Understanding of complex technologies like firewalls, IPS, and load balancing;
Ability to learn to use network tools to aid in troubleshooting / monitoring the network;
Self-motivated and passionate about learning new technologies;
Ability to work on outages while maintaining the ability to think critically and remain calm and composed;
Ability to work to deadlines and think critically about the task at hand;
Strong ability to collaborate with subject matter experts and effectively work with (and learn from) other employees to drive outcomes;

A) Possession of an Associate’s degree
* or completion of 60 credits towards a Bachelor degree in Computer Networking Systems or Systems and Network Administration and six (6) months experience (or 6 months internship) performing network administration tasks or helpdesk experience; OR
