Position Summary
The Information Technology Support Specialist – Public Safety – provides technical support for the Lamar County Sheriff’s
Department, Emergency Communications/911, and Emergency Management operations. This position is responsible for
maintaining reliable, secure technology systems that support public safety, emergency response, and county operations. The
position requires occasional after-hours support and response to critical technology incidents.
Provide day-to-day technical support to Sheriff’s Department personnel, dispatchers, Emergency Management staff, and authorized county users and devices:
- Computers, mobile devices, printers, and related equipment.
- Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot hardware, software, and network resources.
- Support public safety applications including dispatch, records management, emergency notification, and related systems.
- Assist with patrol vehicle technology, surveillance systems, access control, digital evidence, and other specialized public safety technologies.
- Maintain networks, servers, cloud services, firewalls, VPNs, and related infrastructure.
- Manage user accounts, permissions, email access, and multifactor authentication.
- Monitor system performance, perform updates, maintain backups, and assist with disaster recovery planning.
- Protect sensitive and criminal justice information in accordance with applicable security requirements.
- Respond to technology outages and service disruptions affecting public safety operations.
- Participate in on-call rotations and provide after-hours support when required.
- Assist with technology planning, budgeting, purchasing, inventory management, and vendor coordination.
- Maintain technical documentation and records.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Associate degree in Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
- Two (2) years of experience supporting computers, networks, or information systems.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft 365, computer hardware, networking, and cybersecurity best practices.
- Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass required background checks and maintain access to criminal justice information systems.
- Ability to work outside normal business hours and respond to emergencies when required.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Experience supporting law enforcement, 911, emergency management, or other public safety organizations.
- Experience with public safety software, Microsoft server technologies, cloud services, and network security.
- Relevant industry certifications such as CompTIA, Microsoft, or Cisco.
- Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
