Our Small Commercial Underwriting team is currently seeking a Senior Field Underwriter to join our team. This is a full‑time, exempt role that is eligible for a fully remote arrangement. The actual job title and level may be flexible, depending on candidate qualifications and experience.
POSITION OVERVIEWSmall Commercial Senior Field Underwriters are responsible for driving the growth of Small Commercial Lines (CL) business by underwriting new business across all lines and sizes of POS and Non‑POS accounts. They also build and maintain strong agency relationships with Agency staff and SCSMs, working closely with and directing the activities of their UT partner(s) following established workflows.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL- Categorize and direct UT on next steps based on assessment and categorization.
- Document underwriting decisions within standards and expectations in underwriting systems.
- Communicate coverages and coverage advantages to highlight in the quoting process, including account rounding opportunities and cross‑sell opportunities for Specialty businesses on accounts being quoted. The account responsibility falls to the Portfolio Underwriter, although consultation with Field and Portfolio Underwriters is expected as required.
- Communicate proactively with agents to convey a sense of ownership and service during all interactions.
- Instill confidence with agents in their decision to place new business with The Hanover, mainly SCSMs, UTs and Renewal UW colleagues, to communicate difficult messages most effectively with agent partners and overall agency management.
- New Business Production (approximately $2 Million annually).
- Quality of audits/file reviews and achievement of mix goals aligned with workflows.
- Strong underwriting skill and coverage knowledge; ability to make underwriting decisions on POS and CPP accounts up to $50,000 premium size.
- Sales orientation: able to solicit, qualify, negotiate and close accounts in a manner that promotes deeper partnership with agents.
- Demonstrated commitment to service and partners; high level of responsiveness to UTs, SCSMs and renewal UWs, demonstrating strong relationship building.
- Knowledge of competition and the current marketplace; apply understanding to every opportunity, ranging from exception to only underwriting on the small BOP to more thorough review on larger or more complex accounts.
