About the Role

As an Underwriter on the Lawyers Professional Liability (LPL) team, you will be at the heart of evaluating, pricing, and managing a diverse portfolio of law firm risks. Working alongside brokers, claims professionals, actuaries, and underwriting colleagues, you will bring analytical rigor and market savvy to every decision. This is a role where your judgment matters, your relationships count, and your contributions directly drive the profitable growth of a premier LPL portfolio.

Key Responsibilities
  • Underwrite LPL risks within assigned authority, evaluating firm characteristics to determine risk acceptability with precision and confidence
  • Establish appropriate pricing, terms, conditions, limits, and retentions to ensure each risk is structured for long-term profitability
  • Manage a portfolio of new and renewal business, balancing growth objectives with disciplined underwriting standards
  • Maintain compliance with underwriting guidelines and procedures, documenting decisions and rationale to company standards
  • Develop and nurture strong broker and agency relationships, delivering responsive service and timely underwriting decisions that set us apart in the market
  • Participate in broker meetings, stewardship discussions, and marketing activities to strengthen partnerships and identify new business opportunities
  • Contribute to business planning and portfolio management initiatives, identifying opportunities to improve retention and enhance underwriting effectiveness
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Claims, Products, Actuarial, and Legal teams to support portfolio objectives and address emerging risks
  • Engage in underwriting discussions on industry trends, coverage issues, and evolving risk landscapes to keep our approach sharp and forward-thinking
  • Support process improvement and operational excellence initiatives to continuously elevate team performance

We

are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:
  • 3-5 years of insurance underwriting experience, with demonstrated ability to evaluate and price complex risks
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to assess risk characteristics and apply sound underwriting judgment
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate underwriting positions to brokers and internal stakeholders
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
These are additional nice to haves:
  • Experience in professional liability underwriting, particularly Lawyers Professional Liability
  • CPCU, RPLU, ARM, or other insurance designations, or active progress toward completion
  • Direct broker and agent relationship management experience
  • Familiarity with portfolio management tools and underwriting analytics
  • Knowledge of emerging risks and coverage trends within the legal professional liability space

The estimated base salary range for this position is $120,000 to $192,000. The specific salary offered for this, or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget.
