About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Specialists review model responses, write high-quality examples, and define what accurate, well-reasoned answers should look like. In insurance and actuarial work, expert judgment helps models handle complex professional tasks with greater accuracy and soundness.

This role combines domain expertise with evaluation, instruction writing, and benchmark development. Your feedback can help shape how cutting-edge AI systems reason about insurance problems.

  • Evaluate AI-generated text for accuracy and professional quality
  • Write examples and standards that define correct answers
  • Help measure whether models improve on challenging insurance tasks
The Role

Open Train AI is seeking a senior insurance and actuarial domain expert to review and improve AI model outputs. You will work with research and program management teams to create instruction specifications, produce golden solutions, and develop benchmark datasets for insurance tasks.

This is a hybrid contractor engagement in the Bay Area, California. The role description calls for 40 hours per week for an initial six-month engagement. Listing details also indicate a 20+ hour weekly requirement and part-time contractor classification, so confirm the current schedule during the application process.

The listed hourly compensation range is $60 to $100 USD.

  • Location:

    Bay Area, California
  • Work arrangement:
Hybrid, with on-site work multiple days per week
  • Engagement:
    Initial six-month contract
  • Listed compensation: $60 to $100 per hour
  • Language:
    English
  • Country:
    United States
What You'll Do

You will apply practical insurance and actuarial judgment to help establish reliable standards for AI-generated work. The position requires both careful evaluation and the ability to explain why an answer is correct, incomplete, or merely plausible-sounding.

  • Review insurance knowledge-work tasks and model outputs for accuracy, depth, and professional soundness.
  • Write high-quality instruction specifications for insurance and actuarial tasks.
  • Produce golden solutions that demonstrate correct reasoning and outcomes.
  • Design challenging insurance tasks and evaluation sets to measure model improvement.
  • Build benchmark datasets that define correctness for insurance work.
  • Collaborate with researchers and specialists to calibrate domain standards.
Required Qualifications

Although the listing is categorized as entry level, the role description requires senior-level insurance or actuarial expertise. Candidates must bring substantial professional experience and be able to assess whether AI answers are genuinely well reasoned rather than simply convincing in tone.

  • Actuarial credential such as FSA, ASA, FCAS, or ACAS, or an active state insurance license in adjusting, underwriting, or broking.
  • At least four years of substantive insurance experience at a carrier, reinsurer, broker, adjusting firm, or regulator.
  • Genuine specialization in an area such as life and annuity, property and casualty, health, or reinsurance.
  • Demonstrated seniority through ownership of a book, reserve, or claims portfolio.
  • Hands-on experience using large language models in professional work.
  • Ability to distinguish well-reasoned AI outputs from plausible-sounding answers.
  • Excellent written communication and precise, structured feedback skills.
  • Ability to live in the Bay Area and work on-site multiple days per week.
  • Ability to commit to 40 hours per week for the initial six-month engagement.
Helpful Background

Experience with AI training data or evaluation is helpful but not required. Familiarity with instruction-tuning or reinforcement learning from human feedback can also help you contribute effectively to model evaluation work.

  • Experience designing or evaluating AI training data
  • Experience creating or assessing benchmarks
  • Familiarity with instruction-tuning
  • Familiarity with reinforcement learning from human feedback
