Assistant Chief of Police

SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Police Chief, provides complex and highly responsible administrative support to the Police Chief, serves as commanding officer for investigations and Patrol Divisions including the Photographic Traffic Control System, Traffic Safety Program, and may be required to assist Department Director on Code Compliance detail. Plans. coordinates and controls the activities of department personnel regarding allocation and deployment of personnel and equipment;

and performs other related work as required or assigned.

• Work requires supervising and monitoring performance of police department employees, including input on the selection and hiring of department staff, conducting performance evaluations, realigning workloads or shift details, and issuing disciplinary actions as needed.
• Work requires comprehensive, practical knowledge and analytical judgment for developing, implementing, and making decisions regarding policies and procedures appropriate to the department and its environment; requiring advanced communication, reading and writing skills.
• This position has major fiscal responsibility and accountability for department-wide financial decisions; requires the application of best-judgment to meet budgetary and departmental goals and objectives. Closely monitoring budgeted funds and allocations.

The minimum eligibility requirements and documentation needed for this position include:

• Fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement, with Investigative and Police Patrol experience.
• Master Peace Officer Certification from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
• Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, other law enforcement related course of study, or equivalent years of experience and education in law enforcement.

Extra consideration will be given to applicants who have:

• Bilingual (English/Spanish)
• Directed or Commanded emergency response scenes, to include barricaded subjects, hostage situations, and active shooter scenes.
• Police Instructor Certification.

• Copies of significant degrees, licenses, and/or certifications.
• Completed Driver Background Authorization Form
  - Must have a Clean Driving Record with a Valid Texas Driver’s License.
• Completed Information Release Authorization Form to Obtain Criminal Records – Must pass background investigation.
• Copies of L2 Medical Condition Declaration and L3 Psychological and Emotional Health Declaration – Must pass psychological and physical evaluation, including drug exams.
• Letters of Recommendation by a City Manager, Police Chief, or Superior Officer.
