The Senior Counsel, Real Estate will be a key member of the Company's in-house legal team, serving as a strategic legal partner and subject matter expert across a broad range of real estate matters, with primary responsibility for property operations, asset management, leasing, and general portfolio matters, as well as providing transactional support for acquisitions, dispositions, and other strategic initiatives. This position reports directly to the Vice President, Real Estate Counsel and will work closely with, and provide guidance to, teams across Asset/Property Management, Leasing, Investments, and Development/Construction.

The ideal candidate will be a commercially minded and strategically oriented real estate attorney who thrives on partnering directly with business teams to drive solutions for day-to-day legal and operational issues while also handling sophisticated transactional matters. This individual should be comfortable working independently, be able to balance legal risk with business objectives, and serve as a trusted strategic advisor to internal stakeholders across the Company's real estate platform.

The Senior Counsel will also be expected to contribute to the continued development of the Legal Department’s processes and capabilities.

Requirements
  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law
  • Current member in good standing with the California Bar or, if licensed elsewhere, qualify for and promptly obtain California Registered In-House Counsel status.
  • Approximately 5-7 years of experience practicing real estate law at a leading law firm or as part of an in-house legal Experience representing or working for institutional landlords, public companies and/or public real estate investment trusts is a plus.
  • General commercial real estate transactional experience, including experience advising on commercial real estate operations, leasing, property management, acquisitions/dispositions, and related matters is critical. Knowledge of construction law and/or contract principles is a plus.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills are key, as well as the ability to manage and prioritize a high volume of requests and competing matters at any given time.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability “think on the fly” and provide quick, sound legal advice in evolving situations.
  • Team player with a history of working closely with business stakeholders, deal teams, other lawyers, paralegals, and legal assistants in a collaborative environment.

Summary of Responsibilities
  • Serve as a primary legal partner and trusted advisor to the Asset/Property Management and Leasing teams on a wide range of operational, tenant, and portfolio-related Provide strategic, practical day-to-day legal counsel regarding property operations, tenant matters, vendor relationships, risk management, sustainability initiatives, and contract administration, proactively identifying issues and driving efficient resolution.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on contracts and agreements relating to the ownership, management, operation, maintenance, and leasing of the Company's real estate assets, including commercial leases, amendments, renewals, consents, estoppels, SNDAs, and related agreements.
