The Role

Developing and delivering initiatives, tools and technical managerial guidance to support NHS Lanarkshire to meet Scottish Government sustainability expectations, NHS Scotland mandatory requirements, and policy commitments. This involves driving forward a change and improvement agenda for sustainability and climate change, emphasizing energy management to deliver initiatives improving energy efficiency across our estate.

This Will Be Delivered Through
  • Provision of expert advice on interpretation of sustainability & climate change data and trends, evidence-based practice and national policy.
  • Developing and delivering initiatives, tools and technical and managerial guidance to support the meeting of Scottish Government’s sustainability expectations and influencing and advising NHS Lanarkshire Property & Estates Strategies on all sustainable development and environmental matters.
  • Delivering specialist support to colleagues and partners, including workstream management and project management to achieve sustainability outcomes, and providing support and advice on the impact of different clinical and operational practices on the overall sustainability requirements and expectations of NHS Lanarkshire.

In addition to providing expert advice and support to other functions within NHS Lanarkshire, the Sustainability and Environmental team is responsible for reporting on sustainability performance to NHS Assurance and Scottish Government. They also manage the utilities portfolio, including day‑to‑day enquiries, arranging meter replacements and providing data to internal and external users, and oversee ongoing improvement carbon reduction projects in collaboration with key stakeholders.

What You’ll Bring
  • Educated to degree level in an environment or sustainability‑related subject, or with extensive relevant equivalent experience.
  • Further qualification or equivalent work experience or knowledge in a subject related to sustainability, planning or programme management at masters level.
  • Membership or Fellowship of one or more Professional Institutes (IEMA, EI, EMA, etc.) is advantageous.

Specialist knowledge of EU, UK and Scottish government policy, legislation and regulation in sustainable development and environmental management, gained through extensive experience at senior level in the public sector (e.g., NHS, local authority or environmental regulatory body) or private sector, including sustainability or environmental consultancy.
