Chief of Police
Port of Seattle
Seattle, WA

A national search is underway for a strategic, engaging, and experienced police executive to serve as the Port of Seattle’s next Chief of Police. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a fully commissioned, nationally accredited agency central to the Port’s public safety mission.

Governed by a five-member Port Commission, the Port employs approximately 2,500 full-time equivalent employees across Aviation, Maritime, Economic Development, and Central Services, which includes the Port of Seattle Police Department (POSPD).

The POSPD provides policing and public safety services at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA), maritime and cruise facilities, commercial fishing and marina properties, industrial sites, and Port-managed public areas. With a 2025–2026 budget of $48 million, the Department operates in a complex, multi-jurisdictional environment requiring strong local, state, federal, tribal, and international partnerships. Its 196 personnel include 138 commissioned officers and 58 civilian professionals assigned across three bureaus led by deputy chiefs.

Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, the Chief oversees all Department functions and ensures effective law enforcement services at SEA, the Seaport, and other Port properties. The Chief works with Port executives, business units, and external partners to develop and execute strategies that support operational continuity, security, and public safety.

The ideal candidate will be a strategic executive with strong organizational leadership and law enforcement expertise. They will have a record of leading change, managing complex operations, improving performance, and the ability to align public safety priorities with the Port’s mission. The Chief will build trusted partnerships, develop high-performing employees, promote accountability and continuous improvement, and lead with integrity, sound judgment, humility, resilience, and emotional intelligence.

The Chief of Police is an at-will position with an annual salary range of $246,997 to $306,061. Placement will reflect the scope and level of the candidate’s comparable experience. The Port participates in Washington’s Law Enforcement Officers’ and Fire Fighters’ Retirement System (LEOFF), a 401(a)-lifetime pension plan and an array of other benefits.
