About APSIA
Founded in 1989, the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA) is a global network of graduate schools specializing in international affairs. The Association advances international understanding, prosperity, peace, and security through the people and ideas shaped by its member schools.

APSIA brings together the leading graduate schools around the world which specialize in international affairs. We strengthen our members and affiliates by gathering information and sharing ideas. We connect prospective students and employers to our member schools, so that they can capitalize on the skills an APSIA education provides. We collaborate with other higher education institutions and the professional international affairs community to address common problems.

APSIA helps students, schools, organizations, and partners transform themselves into more effective agents of positive change.
As of September 2026, APSIA has 43 members and 34 affiliates based in 21 countries. Its membership reflects a diverse range of institutions and perspectives from the Americas, Europe, Asia, and MENA. Our work spans several areas including admissions, career services, alumni engagement, communications, and development. Deans and senior leaders gather annually to discuss issues facing international affairs education and exchange ideas and practices.

About the Executive Director
The Executive Director works under the supervision of the APSIA Executive Committee, particularly the President, , to advance the Association's mission, support its members, and lead the organization.

This is a hands-on leadership role in a small, fully remote organization. The Executive Director combines strategic leadership and external representation with direct responsibility for financial management, staff supervision, communications, human resources, investments, member engagement, programming, strategic planning, and administration. The role requires someone who is comfortable setting direction while also working directly on the practical details needed to run the Association, moving easily between high-level strategic work and operational tasks.

The position requires experience managing a nonprofit, a similarly complex international organization, or a university, as well as a background in nonprofit management and administration.

The Executive Director should have strong judgment, initiative, diplomacy, organization, and communication skills and be able to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and across cultures. They should be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, operating under the direction of the Executive Committee. The Executive Director should be an entrepreneurial self-starter and a relationship-builder who seeks partnerships to expand APSIA’s impact beyond what it can achieve on its own.

The Executive Director typically travels domestically and internationally throughout the year. Some non-standard hours, including evening and weekend work, may be required.

Responsibilities

Strategy and Organizational Leadership:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Committee to set APSIA's priorities and implement and evaluate the Association's strategic plan. Facilitate the Executive Committee virtual meetings.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen APSIA's impact, membership, and financial sustainability, including growth in underrepresented regions.
  • Evaluate program offerings, in response to member needs , as well as the evolving context of international affairs education
  • Straighten APSIA’s…
