GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the floor operator is to perform regular tasks that need to be done on the AOD deck.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Taking temperature and samples from both AOD’s
  • Delivering acceptable samples to the lab for analysis.
  • Making manual additions to ladle when needed.
  • Stocking material on the deck that is needed for heats to come.
  • Helping with AOD vessel changes.
  • Helping with any maintenance that needs to be done if needed.
  • Running the scrap charge cars if needed in manual; ensuring all material in the chutes makes it into the AOD. If there are any issues that need to be addressed, let the refiner know.
  • Making sure the deck is swept and clean on your shift.
  • Ensuring that any trash is put in the dumpster; flying the dumpster off the back deck and having the chute box loader emptied and replaced. This must be done every shift.
  • Assisting crane operators in raising and sitting ladles in the AOD cars if requested by the crane operator.
  • Ensuring the temp poles are working properly; changing them if necessary. Old ones need to be flown back down to the rack.
  • Assisting the AOD refiner and/or desk operator in any job that may need to be done.
  • Assisting the desk operator in the slag off operation.
  • Assisting with any job that you may be needed for, to help production at NAS.
  • When time allows, training with the desk operator on learning the desk job operation.
  • Informing the refiner if there is any issue that needs to be addressed for safe performance of your job; also bringing this to your Group Leader so that the concern can be resolved.
  • Tapping heats from AOD vessels into ladle, with or without a lid.
  • Ensuring slag samples are taken and sent to the lab.
  • Performing scale checks as needed.
  • SUPPLEMENTAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Participation in relevant continuous improvement programs.
  • Communicating with the lab on sample quality and issues.
  • Attending all safety and communication meetings.
  • Maintaining the work area to 6S standard.
  • Participating in TPM, SMED, and other auxiliary programs.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
    • High school diploma.
    • Good communication skills.
    • Great understanding of the chute box loader position.
    • Ability to take instructions and apply them daily.
    PHYSICAL ABILITIES REQUIRED
    • Mobility in the plant.
    • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, etc.
    • Frequently required to use hands for technical tasks.
    • Occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.
    • Visual ability with or without correction.
    • Communication abilities.
    • Ability to work a rotating shift (days to nights weekly or bi‑weekly).
    • Occasional climbing.
    • Ability to work in a high heat environment.
    HEALTH AND SAFETY

    1. Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.

    2. Follow company safety rules.

    3. Report absence or defect in any protective equipment or clothing to the supervisor or manager immediately.

    4. Use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that is required:

    • a. Safety shoes
    • b. Safety glasses
    • c. Hearing protection
    • d. Hard Hat
    • e. Respirators; must be clean‑shaven to comply with company policies and OSHA regulations.
    • f. Fire‑retardant clothing
    • g. Acid PPE
    • h. Fall protection (safety harness)
    • i. High‑temperature gloves and face shield (when necessary).

    5. Report to the Safety Coordinator, Group Lead or supervisor any contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations or company policy.

    6. Follow all Lock‑out Tag‑out (LOTO) guidelines for designated machines.

    7. Follow all environmental policies and regulations.

    8. Maintain a clean and safe work area.
