Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities
The Chemical Decontamination Technician works with a team in a highly controlled industrial and nuclear environment to use chemical processes in order to decontaminate radio logically contaminated components onsite at Three Mile Island. Strict compliance with approved procedures, work instructions, permits, and safety controls is an essential function of the position. The technician reports to the chemical decontamination manager and is expected to stop work and seek direction whenever actual conditions differ from approved instructions or expected plant conditions.
Key Responsibilities- Operate a chemical decontamination plant system located at the TMI-2 facility.
- Adhere to operational procedures, safety protocols, and performance metrics during operation of the chemical decontamination system.
- Drive operational improvements to improve system operations and increase throughput.
- Understand and use Stop Work Authority and make notifications when plant conditions differ from procedures, expected operating parameters, or established safety limits.
- Perform equipment lineups, pre-operational inspections, system startups, normal operations, shutdowns, and post-operation activities as trained and authorized.
- Monitor plant equipment and process parameters, including tank levels, temperatures, pressures, flow rates, chemical concentrations, ventilation status, alarms, and instrumentation readings.
- Record operating data, complete logs and checklists, and maintain clear, accurate, and timely records of plant activities.
- Perform chemical receipt, transfer, mixing, sampling, neutralization, filtration, rinsing, and waste‑handling activities as authorized by procedure.
- Inspect pumps, valves, tanks, piping, hoses, filters, instrumentation, ventilation equipment, and other plant components for abnormal conditions, leakage, degradation, or improper operation.
- Support system commissioning, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment modifications under the direction of operations, engineering, or maintenance personnel.
- Participate in pre-job briefings, shift turnovers, post-job reviews, safety meetings, and operational readiness activities.
- Use required chemical, industrial, and radiological personal protective equipment and comply with contamination‑control, hazardous‑material, lockout/tagout, and site safety requirements.
- Maintain cleanliness, proper material storage, equipment readiness, and inventory of operating supplies and consumables.
- Provide field observations and operating experience to support procedure improvements, corrective actions, and process improvements.
- Coordinate effectively with operations, maintenance, engineering, radiation protection, industrial safety, quality assurance, and project personnel.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree, technical diploma, military technical training, apprenticeship, or equivalent industrial training preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to follow detailed written procedures, work instructions, permits, and safety requirements without unauthorized deviation.
- Strong commitment to procedural compliance, questioning attitude, stop-work responsibility, and conservative decision‑making.
- Basic understanding of industrial process equipment, including pumps, valves, tanks, piping, filters, heat‑transfer equipment, ventilation systems, and process instrumentation.
- Ability to read and interpret operating procedures, equipment identification, system diagrams, basic P&IDs, safety data sheets, and equipment manuals.
- Ability to monitor process conditions, recognize abnormal equipment or system behavior, and promptly communicate concerns.
