Hippie Hued is a Chicago-based upcycled clothing brand and textile studio looking for an experienced local production sewer/sample maker to help us increase production of one of our signature garments.
We create oversized sweatshirt-style tunics "Sweat-Ts" from reclaimed textiles including vintage woven blankets, towels, fleece blankets, sweatshirts, bedspreads, and other found materials.
Our designs, patterns, and construction methods are already developed. We are not looking for a fashion designer, we are looking for someone with strong garment construction skills who can accurately and efficiently reproduce our established sewing methods.
Initial responsibilities may include:- - Assembling pre-cut garment panels
- - Attaching sleeves and sewing garment seams
- - Cutting and attaching rib knit/trim
- - Sewing in labels
- - Finishing and quality control
- - Following an existing garment/sample as a construction reference
- - Cutting garments using our existing patterns
- - Working from marked placement/design instructions
- - Fully constructing our simpler Sweat-T designs from start to finish
Every garment is visually different because we work with one-of-a-kind reclaimed textiles, but the underlying pattern and general construction process remain consistent.
Ideal candidate:- - Located in Chicago or the surrounding area
- - Experienced in professional garment construction
- - Comfortable using industrial sewing equipment
- - Experienced with a serger/overlock machine and straight-stitch machine
- - Comfortable working with varying fabric weights and unconventional/reclaimed textiles
- - Able to accurately follow existing patterns and sew-by samples
- - Detail-oriented with clean finishing
- - Interested in ongoing small-batch work rather than a single project
Experience in apparel production, sample making, small-batch manufacturing, or production sewing is strongly preferred.
We would like to begin with a paid test project of approximately 2-3 garments. If it’s a good fit for both sides, we hope to build an ongoing relationship with batches of approximately 5-15+ garments at a time.
For your application, please include:- - Your location
- - Your sewing/garment production experience
- - Photos or portfolio examples of garments you have constructed
- - What sewing equipment you have access to
- - Your hourly rate or preferred pricing structure
- - Whether you would be interested in ongoing production work
We’re especially interested in finding someone local who can become a long-term part of our production process as Hippie Hued grows.
