Student Outreach & Communications Assistant Position Overview
The Kansas African Studies Center (KASC) Outreach & Communications Assistant will play a vital role in helping the Center’s outreach, communications, and public engagement efforts. The student hourly worker will help promote KASC events and initiatives, including communication across multiple platforms.
Job Description- 20% - Event Promotion
- Collaborate with the Coordinator of Outreach and Communications to promote KASC events through various outreach and communication channels.
- 20% - Outreach Initiatives
- Develop and implement outreach initiatives to increase awareness and engagement with KASC programs and activities.
- 20% - Networking & Contact Management
- Build and maintain contact lists to support networking efforts and future projects.
- 20% - Website & Social Media Engagement
- Support and enhance user engagement with the KASC website and social media accounts.
- Develop content and assist with digital communication strategies.
- 20% - Educational Resource Development
- Develop and maintain collections of pedagogical materials for K-12 visits, educator workshops, and public events.
- Must be in good academic standing, as indicated in application materials.
- Experience with website management and social media communication as evidenced by application materials
- Experience with Microsoft Word Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook as evidenced by application materials
- Experience with creating promotional flyers and content, as indicated in application materials.

- Academic emphasis on African Studies or the African diaspora, as indicated in application materials.
- Familiarity with an African Language other than English, as indicated in application materials.
- Familiarity with KU courses in African Studies and KU’s Africanist faculty, as indicated in application materials.
- Experience working with KU CMS websites, Wordpress, or other content-management systems as evidenced by application materials
- Experience working in an office environment, as indicated in application materials.
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud Programs, as indicated in application materials.
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.
Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
