NAMI SWI Resource Development & Sustainability VISTA
NAMI Southwest Iowa provides free mental health education, peer-led support, family support, re-entry programming, and recovery-related resources across a nine-county region in southwest Iowa. As community need grows, the organization must strengthen donor development systems that support long-term sustainability beyond short-term grants and event-based fundraising.
The Resource Development & Sustainability VISTA will help build the infrastructure needed to grow and retain community support. This position will focus on donor stewardship, annual giving systems, donor data quality, community partner engagement, impact storytelling, and sustainability planning. The VISTA will develop tools, templates, workflows, and written procedures that help staff communicate impact, engage donors year-round, and maintain consistent follow-up with individuals, businesses, and community supporters.
This is a capacity-building role for someone who enjoys organizing systems, improving communication, telling meaningful stories, and helping a mission-driven nonprofit become more sustainable. The member’s work will help NAMI Southwest Iowa continue providing no-cost programs for individuals and families impacted by mental health conditions, substance use, incarceration, rural isolation, and financial hardship.
The VISTA member will strengthen NAMI Southwest Iowa’s donor development systems by improving donor tracking, segmentation, stewardship, and follow-up processes. They will create donor communication templates, impact updates, annual giving tools, campaign timelines, and community partner engagement materials. The member will help organize donor data in Little Green Light, document procedures, and build a donor stewardship calendar that staff can use year-round.
They will also develop systems for collecting impact stories and program data for donor communications while protecting confidentiality. By the end of service, the VISTA will create a donor development manual, 12-month engagement plan, and transition materials to help NAMI Southwest Iowa sustain these systems after the service term ends.
