Position Overview

The Salvation Army Midland Divisional Headquarters located in St. Louis, Missouri, is searching for a Community Engagement Manager. This is a salaried position that comes with an excellent benefits package.

Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate is a strategic thinker who loves people and has the winning ability to match people’s service passions with the volunteer needs of the organization (approximately 50% of the job). This person will assist individuals with making a difference in their community through volunteer opportunities with The Salvation Army. They will enjoy matching people's strengths and passions with the available service needs of our organization.

Key Responsibilities

They will also serve as point person for volunteer needs at organization events such as the annual Red Kettle Campaign (approximately 30%). The person who fills the role is also responsible for volunteer data management and processing, and logistics, and must display outstanding customer service (approximately 20%).

The essential duties of this position are:

  • Develop and implement volunteer recruitment and management policies and procedures in accordance with organizational policies and existing Volunteer Handbook.
  • Maintain a customer service mindset in every connection with officers, staff, the community and volunteers.
  • Establish annual goals and objectives for community engagement in mission and ministry.
  • Manage and troubleshoot as needed the online volunteer platform.
  • Manage a year-round strategy for recruiting groups of volunteers from corporations and community groups.
  • Empower officers, staff, and volunteers to identify volunteer needs, announce opportunities, and produce volunteer job descriptions through coaching and by sharing best practices, including training and materials.
  • Meet or exceed Red Kettle Campaign volunteer hours and goals (bell ringing, Angel Tree Toy Town, etc.).
  • Work with staff and committees to determine, organize, fill and manage volunteer needs for various events.
  • Develop and implement recruitment, screening, training, placement, integration, and compliance plans to ensure volunteers are prepared and equipped to successfully complete assignments.
  • Provide thorough instructions and ensure all volunteers are acknowledged in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accuracy of volunteer database records and provide timely and trustworthy reports as needed.
  • Serve as a speaker to clubs, civic organizations and churches throughout the region, alongside officer leadership.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with volunteer policies, Safe from Harm training and background screenings.
  • Maintain inventory of all bell ringing equipment (signage, aprons, bells, etc.).
  • Create opportunities for volunteer recognition and appreciation.
  • Plan and execute events outside of and in addition to “normal work hours” that require volunteer recruitment, management and coordination.
  • Serve as staff liaison to service-focused affinity groups such as Echelon, our young professionals’ group.
  • Liaise with volunteer support agencies and represent The Salvation Army in volunteer associations.
  • Take on immediate and added responsibilities to support the Army’s Emergency Disaster Services team as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

A candidate will need a bachelor's degree and four years of related work experience. A combination of education and experience will be taken into consideration. We're looking for an individual who is professional, personable, works well with people, and one who understands and appreciates the diverse audience in local communities. Previous supervisory or volunteer management experience is required. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

We’re seeking someone who has skill and confidence in computer software applications including Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook, and who can navigate the internet. They must have a valid driver's license and pass The Salvation Army MVR.
