Youth Engagement Coordinator

Position Summary

Michigan State University (MSU) seeks a collaborative and highly organized Youth Engagement Specialist to support the Health Equity Research for Action (HERA) Coordinating Center, a national initiative funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The HERA Coordinating Center supports research that advances health equity through community-centered, action-oriented, and systems-level approaches. The position will work closely with the Center Directors, Director of Community Engagement, and the MSU HERA Community Advisory Board to increase participation among young adults ages 18-24;

recruit and maintain a diverse pool of community and youth reviewers; and coordinate reviewer training, communications, review activities, and compensation. The position will also support the onboarding and ongoing participation of National Advisory Committee members and serve as a liaison with youth-focused organizations.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical school or related field; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in customer service or in performing tasks related to the area of employment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Experience working with youth and youth-serving organizations, including youth advisory groups, leadership programs, or similar community-engaged initiatives. Experience supporting youth engagement and community-engaged or community-based participatory research (CBPR). Experience in an academic or higher education setting supporting research, sponsored projects, academic centers, or community-engaged programs is preferred. Relevant experience may include recruiting and coordinating reviewers, volunteers, committee members, or other participants;

maintaining contact lists and listservs; coordinating meetings, trainings, orientations, and events; developing training and orientation materials; conducting literature reviews; and creating infographics, multimedia resources, or website content.

Knowledge equivalent to that normally acquired through the first two or three years of college, including coursework in public health, psychology, youth development, education, or a related field; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible experience with youth, youth-serving organizations, community partners, academic or research initiatives, or advisory groups; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Well-organized and highly detail-oriented, with the ability to coordinate multiple activities and deadlines, maintain accurate records, and follow established processes across academic and community settings. Strong oral and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with young adults, youth-serving organizations, community partners, faculty, and staff representing diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences, and to serve as a liaison among academic, community, and youth partners in support of meaningful and sustained participation.

Proficient in Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, along with calendaring and scheduling tools, and web-based research platforms, with the ability to learn new systems and technologies. Ability to navigate administrative processes within an academic or similarly complex organization is desirable.
