The staff nurse is a graduate of an approved school of nursing and is currently licensed to practice as a professional nurse in the state of Kentucky. The Staff Nurse, under supervision of the House Supervisor and Director of Nursing, is responsible for the nursing care of the patients assigned to him/her and as a team leader, directs others in patient care.
He/she should have a thorough knowledge of nursing principles and procedures, knowledge and skill in techniques of good patient care.
- Correctly assess the patient’s physical and mental condition and identify the patient’s needs.
- Complete assessment of patient on admission and record a nursing admission note in the patient’s record.
- Initiate on admission a written patient care plan including identified problems/action and discharge plan.
- Recognize and interpret signs and symptoms by continually assessing the patient’s condition; document pertinent information in the medical record and report to the physician.
- Provide care within established standards and policies; assist with orientation of new personnel.
- Instruct, guide, and assist other nursing personnel in documentation of care; supervise as needed; be technically capable of performing and supervising procedures per the Nursing Practice Guideline Manual.
- Assume responsibility for care of all patients assigned; closely supervise, assist, and/or care for the acutely ill patient; assign more acutely ill patients to the most qualified nursing team member.
- Plan work, set priorities, and delegate nursing functions so that work is equitably assigned.
- Plan, implement, and document patient and family teaching programs.
- Prepare the patient physically and psychologically for treatments, surgical procedures and diagnostic studies.
- Assist the physician with examinations and treatments; make patient rounds with physician.
- Initiate IV infusions, administer IV medications, perform daily IV care, monitor infusion rates per hospital policy.
- Report pertinent information at the end of the shift to the oncoming shift.
- Administer medication (including IV meds) following the Nursing Practice Guidelines.
- Perform and supervise extra duty assignments to ensure completion.
- Perform extra duties as assigned by House Supervisor/Charge Nurse or Director of Nursing.
- Physician’s orders are interpreted and transcribed accurately to the Med Act and Medication Administration Record.
- Initiate all new orders promptly, either personally or by delegating; all STAT orders are initiated immediately.
- Assess and summarize each patient’s status at least once every twelve hours; summary includes statement of progress on admission disease process.
- Document treatments, diagnostic studies, and medications with results and responses; specific descriptive terms; include dressing change details, oxygen therapy every twelve hours, decubitus care response, mental status, restraints, bed rails, teaching, discharge planning.
- Complete Discharge Instruction Sheet upon patient discharge and document all patient teaching.
- Serve as a role model for all team members by setting an example of high standards in dress, conduct, attitude and performance.
- Be emotionally mature and stable; accept responsibility for own and team members’ actions and omissions.
- Observe confidentiality and safeguard all patient-related information.
- Observe personal hygiene and dress code as outlined in the Employee Handbook and Nursing Department Dress Code.
- Attend all mandatory in‑services (Fire, Safety, CPR, Competency, etc.).
