SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The Therapeutic Apheresis Registered Nurse (RN) performs specialized therapeutic apheresis procedures for Sun Coast Blood Centers’ contracted hospitals, research partners, and clinical clients. This role independently assesses, initiates, monitors, and completes apheresis treatments for adult patients in inpatient and outpatient settings, in accordance with physician orders, established protocols, and regulatory requirements.

Nursing care is provided under the supervision of the patient’s attending physician and/or the Sun Coast Blood Centers Medical Director. The Therapeutic Apheresis RN is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care while ensuring compliance with all clinical, regulatory, and quality standards. This position requires flexibility, including on-call coverage, overtime, and the ability to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, based on operational needs.

• Registered Nurse (RN) with active, unrestricted licensure in the State of Florida.
• Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider certification.
• Central Line Certification (30-hour IV Therapy Certification Course).

• Minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience in a hospital setting, oncology unit, intensive care unit, or dialysis center.
• Research experience preferred.

• Valid Florida Driver’s License and driving record that meets Sun Coast Blood Centers’ insurability requirements.
• Reliable transportation.

• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with patients, families, physicians, researchers, and internal team members.
• Strong assessment and critical-thinking skills related to the care of critically ill patients.
• Ability to work independently across multiple clinical environments, including ICU, ED, inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and donor centers.
• Demonstrated proficiency in therapeutic apheresis procedures and patient monitoring.
• Strong phlebotomy skills and competency in accessing and caring for central venous catheters, implantable ports, and fistulas.
• Knowledge of and compliance with cGMPs, SOPs, and regulatory requirements.
• Ability to adapt to frequent updates to standard operating procedures as required by FDA, AABB, ASFA, and organizational policies.
• Strong customer-service orientation and professional judgment.

• Tasks may involve moderate physical demands, including lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects up to 50 pounds.
• Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, and perform other physical tasks as required for the role.

• The role may involve exposure to varying environmental conditions, including inclement weather, and atmospheric elements.
• Potential hazard is due to exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Sun Coast Blood Centers follows OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standards.
• The work environment is typically moderate in noise level but may include both indoor and outdoor settings.

• Independently perform therapeutic apheresis procedures, including therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), red blood cell exchange (RBCX), white blood cell and platelet depletion, and continuous mononuclear cell (CMNC) collections.
• Assess patients prior to treatment and determine clinical suitability to proceed, reporting abnormal findings to the appropriate physician or supervisor.
• Insert peripheral IV catheters and access central venous catheters, ports, and fistulas; perform line care and dressing changes per protocol.
• Monitor patients throughout procedures, including vital signs, laboratory values, electrolyte replacement, and medication administration as ordered.
• Recognize, manage, and document adverse reactions in consultation with physicians, including vasovagal, citrate, and transfusion reactions.
