Kents Hill School is seeking a dedicated
School Nurse to join our Health Center team per diem. School nursing at Kents Hill is a specialized practice that supports student well-being, safety, and academic success through evidence-based care, health promotion, and collaborative engagement with students, families, and faculty.
The School Nurse provides direct and indirect care, case management, health education, and emergency response for a diverse community of high-school-aged students, and works closely with the School’s consulting medical provider to ensure coordinated, high-quality medical care. In our residential setting, the School Nurse plays an essential role in supporting students’ daily lives, providing guidance and reassurance as they navigate both routine and complex health needs.
Evening and weekend on-call support is an essential part of this role. This position is well-suited for a nurse who values meaningful relationships, enjoys working in a holistic, community-centered environment, and is energized by the opportunity to contribute to the overall wellness of an active, vibrant boarding school.
Clinical Care and Case Management
- Provide health assessments, first aid, and episodic or emergency care for students
- Administer medications and develop or follow Individualized Care Plans in accordance with medical orders
- Administer vaccinations and promote compliance with Maine immunization laws; maintain good standing in the Maine Immunization Program
- Coordinate care and follow-up treatment with the School’s consulting medical provider
- Offer health counseling and guidance related to student health concerns or diagnoses
- Manage referrals and follow-up appointments, and maintain awareness of students’ ongoing medical needs
- Support communicable disease prevention, surveillance, notification, and immunization compliance
- Coordinate medication refills and promote medication compliance
- Maintain an organized, safe, clean, and welcoming Health Center environment
- Monitor supply usage and oversee ordering of medical supplies, equipment, and vaccines
- Conduct diagnostic testing and coordinate laboratory services
- Record and manage health documentation and medical records for current and incoming students in an ongoing and timely manner
- Communicate promptly and sensitively with students and families regarding health concerns
- Collaborate closely with the consulting medical provider, athletic trainer, school counselors, advisers, coaches, residential staff, and administrative leaders
- Participate in faculty meetings, orientation programming, and health and wellness education initiatives
- Provide education and training to unlicensed school personnel in compliance with Maine DOE regulations.
- Serve on the CARE Team to support student physical and mental health needs
- Participate in safety committees, emergency preparedness planning, and community wellness initiatives
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, the Maine Nurse Practice Act, and all school policies and procedures
- Assist the Dean of Students with substance-abuse testing as appropriate
- Share on-call coverage, including evenings and weekends, with Health Center staff
- Accompany students to off-campus medical appointments as needed and coordinate with the consulting medical provider
- Maintain records through the State Immunization database as required by the Maine DOE
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) with current Maine state licensure
- Experience working with adolescents and a school or community health background is highly valued
- Current BLS/CPR and AED certification
