The Gastroenterology/Endoscopy Registered Nurse provides safe, evidence-based nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal procedures. The RN is responsible for pre-procedure assessment and preparation, intra-procedure monitoring and assistance, administration and monitoring of moderate sedation when authorized, post-anesthesia recovery, patient education, and discharge planning.

• Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for personal conduct, strives for excellence in patient care.
• Implements nursing process to provide quality care based on assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation.
  • Prepare patients for EGD, colonoscopy, and other diagnostic or therapeutic endoscopic procedures.
  • Continuously monitor cardiac rhythm, oxygen saturation, respiratory status, blood pressure, level of consciousness, pain, and patient response during procedures.
  • Identify patient properly and verify completeness of chart and procedure and procedural site, when applicable.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate patient care plan to meet the individualized needs of the patient.
  • Recognizes and responds promptly to airway compromise, oversedation, bleeding, perforation, hemodynamic instability, allergic reactions, and other procedural complications, including the appropriate use of reversal agents according to provider orders and hospital policy
  • Provide recovery care, including Aldrete scoring, pain and nausea management, discharge-readiness assessment, and post-procedure education.
• Performs nursing procedures based on unit standards of care and hospital policies and protocols, and physician orders (medications, IVs, treatments, moderate sedation within the RN’s scope of practice, etc.)
• Demonstrates knowledge of current Same Day Surgery/ GI related issues.

Demonstrates knowledge and competency in the assessment of patients undergoing gastrointestinal and endoscopic procedures, including:

• Pre-procedure checklist and patient identification
• Pain assessment and management
• Aldrete scoring and post-procedure recovery
• Airway, respiratory, cardiovascular, and level-of-consciousness assessment
• Fasting and bowel-preparation requirements
• Dysphagia Screening
• Demonstrates through work performed knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
• Demonstrates a complete knowledge of endoscopy equipment, electrosurgical safety, infection prevention, and high-level disinfection requirements.
• Participate in emergency preparedness, quality improvement, competency validation, and compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
• Updates documents and answers questions regarding the correct use of all forms, required in the daily operations of the unit.
• Demonstrates competency in the circulating and procedural‑assist responsibilities required in the GI/endoscopy setting, consistent with training, validated competency, and hospital policy:
  • GI/Endoscopy Procedural Nurse Identifies and obtains the supplies, medications, and equipment necessary to prepare the procedure room for the patient and scheduled procedure Verifies that all equipment is available, functional, and prepared according to hospital policy and manufacturer instructions. Assesses and addresses the patient’s individualized physical, emotional, cultural, and safety needs throughout the procedure. Verifies completion and accuracy of the patient’s medical record, including the pre‑procedure assessment, informed consent, required laboratory results, medication reconciliation, allergies, and procedural documentation.
